Based in the seaside town of Aberystwyth, the festival is a five day event that showcases a wide variety of horror-related events. The five days comprise of studio and independent feature films, classics, cult films and even a silent film with live accompaniment. There is a short films competition with a £1000 prize, with entries submitted from around the world. In addition to films, Abertoir features masterclasses, talks, live theatre and music, making the festival a varied and enjoyable event that brings together all aspects of horror. Abertoir also is responsible for the success of independent filmmakers, as films selected in the lineup (eg Colin and Umbrage) have subsequently acquired sales agents from their Abertoir screenings.
