Maurizio Scaparro and Rafael Azcona exceptional protagonists at the Closing Gala of the Seville Festival

Alfonso Guerra spoke in praise of the Italian director while Fernando Trueba did so for the Spanish scriptwriter.

The Seville politician defined Scaparro as “the man of our fantasies and our hopes, the last pulcinella”. Words of praise for the person responsible for the Theatre Sector of the Venice Biennale from Guerra, who congratulated Scaparro for “being the last romantic crossing Europe in the caravan of the commedia del arte”.

After giving his thanks for the recognition, Scaparro stressed the importance of a European film festival being held in Seville, because “Seville is the city of art and the sun”.

Fernando Trueba described Rafael Azcona as “the genius of Spanish cinema”, a modest, discreet genius who “produced a body of work of incredible coherence” and said that there can”t be a European film festival that “doesn”t honour the memory of Rafael Azcona” who made films in many countries in Europe. “He was the best chronicler in the second half of the 20th century of life in our country, with great doses of understanding, tolerance and humour”. His wife, moved, thanked the Seville Festival for recalling the figure of Azcona.

During the gala images were shown from a documentary about his personal life and his professional career, with contributions from many of those who were his friends and fellow workers.

After both tributes, the Festival presented its awards and closed its sixth edition. Javier Martin-Domínguez said he felt proud of the Seville public “who fill the cinemas and know the stories of Europe”.
