The 20th edition of the Reykjavík International Film Festival will take place between September 23rd and October 8th, 2023.
Iceland’s major annual film event, the main purpose of RIFF is to offer a wide selection of groundbreaking, independent cinema, and to highlight the work of young and emerging filmmakers, by presenting only first and second works in the Grand Prix competition category New Visions. The objective of the festival is to increase general interest in independent cinema, increase the level of cinematic literacy and enrich film culture in Iceland by offering different cross-platform programs.

Iceland's got Talent: RIFF Industry Days to showcase them
RIFF Industry Days is the title of a series of workshops and talks to be held during the Reykjavík International Film Festival over the space of four days. The aim to facilitate better mutual knowledge and understanding between important players in the International audiovisual market, and to form a basis for a joint direction within the industry to pursue in the face of mutating markets. On top of that you will get to go to cool cocktail parties, hang out in Reykjavík’s famed nightlife spots and in the past few years industry guests have been invited to meet with the President of Iceland The focus at the RIFF Industry days this year is on the incredible emerging talent in Iceland. Plunge into the country’s musical world renowned for artists such as Björk, Sigurrós, Múm and Of Monsters and Men and meet the Icelandic composers who are now storming the world of cinema.
Among the exciting workshops and events included in the programme are an introduction to the works of Icelandic screen composers who include BAFTA award-winner Ólafur Arnalds, a visit to RVX-Reykjavík Visual Effects whose owners include Baltasar Kormákur (Two Guns, Contraband) and Daði Einarsson, (Gravity, Boardwalk Empire), and an introduction to Icelandic film making. And, with Iceland fast becoming one of the hottest locations to shoot Hollywood movies, be sure not to miss out on a special trip outside of Reykjavík to see some of the landmarks that have appeared in famous international projects. The Industry Days also include a visit to an Icelandic spa, dinners and cocktails.

Icelandic Musicians / Introduction
We will introduce you the works of Icelandic musicians composing for the screen. Over the past decades Icelandic music has become known for being innovative and progressive. Their works often fit imagery perfectly as proven recently when Ólafur Arnalds won a BAFTA award for his work on Broadchurch.
Book turns Film/Introduction
Ever since the Icelandic Film Spring started in 1979, books have been a part of Icelandic film making. We will show you some of those adaptations and meet with the Icelandic Literature Center who will introduce recent novels that might fit the screen.
Icelandic Post Production/Visit to RVX-Reykjavik Visual Effects
Guests will visit RVX-Reykjavik Visual Effects whose owners include Baltasar Kormákur (Two Guns, Contraband) and Daði Einarsson, (Gravity, Boardwalk Empire), formerly of Framework. RVX know what they are talking about when it comes to visual effects. Guests will visit their headquarters and see what they have been up to.
The Icelandic Film Center Introduces: / New Icelandic Film Projects
Icelandic Film making introduced by those best suited for the task. Guest will see clips from various works and learn of Icelandic film identity as well as learn of new productions.
Iceland as Location/Introduction/Trip
Guests will have the possibility to go on a „Location scouting trip“, outside of Reykjavik. There you will see landmarks that have appeared in Icelandic and International projects. This event will be hosted by our long time partner Saga Film.
Honorary award ceremony/Honorary Guests
Every year Reykjavik International Film Festival gives an award for outstanding artistic excellence, among past honours are Jim Jarmusch, Milos Forman, Peter Greenway, Costa-Gavras, Hanna Schygulla, Béla Tarr, Aki Kaurismäki, Hal Hartley, Susanne Bier, Atom Egoyan, Abbas Kiarostami, Dario Argento and Lukas Moodysson.
Parties and dinners/Meet and Greet
Guests will be given good opportunities to get to know one another during dinners, trips, and parties one of which is the ever so popular visit to film director Hrafn Gunnlaugsson.
