Reykjavik International Film Festival

Níu dagar í RIFF 2023! Miðasalan er hafin

The 20th edition of the Reykjavík International Film Festival will take place between September 23rd and October 8th, 2023.

Iceland’s major annual film event, the main purpose of RIFF is to offer a wide selection of groundbreaking, independent cinema, and to highlight the work of young and emerging filmmakers, by presenting only first and second works in the Grand Prix competition category New Visions. The objective of the festival is to increase general interest in independent cinema, increase the level of cinematic literacy and enrich film culture in Iceland by offering different cross-platform programs.

More great news concerns our special events line-up. The unique RIFF experience will continue this year too with the three trademark RIFF specialities – Cave Cinema, Swim-in Cinema and Ice Cave Cinema – having been officially confirmed for the 2022 RIFF.

Cave Cinema will once more take place at the Raufarhóllshellir lava tube, an underground tunnel shaped by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. All the Cave Cinema screenings will take place on Saturday, 1 October.363ddfc8-e71d-9221-5376-7c964767deeb.jpg

Horror fans will be in for a special treat as they will have the eerie opportunity to watch Neil Marshall’s The Descent, which will be screened twice. Tickets can be purchased and more information can be found at this link for the earlier screening and at this link for the later one

But before we roll out the scream cues, we will try to bring some child laughter to this subterranean environment and give you and your youngest ones the opportunity to watch the stop-motion animation feature The Exploits of Moominpappa — Adventures of a Young Moomin in a completely different cinema venue! More information can be found and tickets purchased at this link.

875fa640-0d2f-cfea-5c54-b52fa65fb20f.jpgThis year’s Swim-in Cinema will feature Peter Weir’s classic The Truman Show. Soak in the geothermally heated waters of the Reykjavík Swimming Pool, under the all-seeing tower of Hallgrímskirkja, and watch Jim Carrey navigate the waters of his character’s seemingly perfect life as he also starts suspecting that some “higher power” is watching over him. Do not forget to bring your swimsuit and see you at this yet another one-of-a-kind RIFF event on Friday, 30 September. Tickets are available for purchase at this link.

In order to round up the incredible spectrum of exclusive RIFF innovations, we have secured one more cinema venue that simply screams Iceland: the Ice Caveb05b1565-c7e3-fc42-ad65-255118596cf4.png Cinema will take place at the man-made glacial tunnel in Iceland’s second largest glacier, Langjökull, on Tuesday, 4 October. This chilling venue will be the perfect setting for the screening of Lars Ostenfeld’s documentary Into the Ice, in which he follows some of the world’s top glaciologists as they try to reveal the uncomfortable truth lying in the depths of the Greenland ice sheet. Take a day trip to the ice tunnel and bring warm clothes and shoes and take part in this extraordinary adventure. Further information and ticket purchases available at this link

This year's honorary guest will be Rossy de Palma and the festival spotlight will be cast on Spanish cinema. Rossy was born in Palma de Mallorca in 1965 and rose to Spanish cinematic stardom during the recent decades. She is part of the influential Madrid scene, which has been inspiring Spanish filmmaking for many years now. The new Spanish Wave, which defines contemporary Spanish cinematography, will revel in the limelight of the 19th RIFF.
The Spanish Wave blurs the boundaries of fiction and reality as well as mirrors the filmmaking icons' achievements. Although the Spanish Wave is free of prescriptive instructions that, among others, characterise Dogma 95, the French New Wave, or neorealism, it shares many of the attributes of the preceding styles. A new generation in the movement has brought along a fresh vision of breaking the wall between reality and fiction.
RIFF's newsletter brings you the hottest festival news and schedule information as the bits and pieces are expected to come into place in the coming days and weeks. We are in for amazing cinematic autumn.
