Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) 2011

The 9th edition of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival will be held from 8-12 December 2011 in Kathmandu - the cultural and cosmopolitan capital of the Himalayan region. Since its birth in 2000, KIMFF has evolved from a festival focusing initially on the Himalaya to one encompassing a wide range of subjects and issues that explore the diverse and complex ways in which human beings relate to mountains. KIMFF seeks to showcase films that attract peer review and critiques that lead to better documentation of mountain issues, particularly of highland regions of the developing world.

About 50 films will be selected for KIMFF 2011. Around 15-20 documentaries will be shortlisted to be viewed by an international jury. Filmmakers can choose whether or not to submit their films for competition. Accepted films not selected for competition will be screened and be eligible for the Audience Award. Films made by Nepali filmmakers will have the opportunity to participate in ‘Nepal Panorama’, a separate showcase of Nepali entries. The objective of ‘Nepal Panoroma’ is to promote Nepali films in all genres.

KIMFF 2011 coincides with Nepal Tourism Year 2011. As part of this effort the festival will feature a special selection of films that have been instrumental in putting Nepal on the world tourism map. Films and activities that celebrate man's spirit for exploration and adventure, will also be part of this edition of the festival.

In the presence of filmmakers, film enthusiasts, critics, scholars, journalists, activists, and mountaineers, the festival will include discussion forums, on-demand screenings, guest lectures, exhibitions of books and photographs celebrating mountains and workshops for aspiring filmmakers.

The irrepressible Terry Gifford headed the jury for the international competition

Gifford's upbeat comments about Kathmandu, the festival and Nepal as a whole, went down well at both the opening and closing ceremonies.

A touch of grandeur at Kathmandu City Hall

City Hall in Kathmandu is as basic as a hall can be. Not a surprise in a Maoist-run country. The one concession to bourgeois trappings is this old chandelier which hangs in the entrance to the auditorium.

The 10th Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) got underway today and will screen some 62 films from 35 different countries before closing on Monday. The opening ceremony was not attended by any celebrities; there were no film stars and only a handful of dignitaries. Instead of champagne and canapés, there was tea and biscuits.  “ We thought of inviting the President, but we weren’t sure if we could handle the cavalcade that would follow,” said the Festival Di...

The Conquest of High Passes

Director: Wout Conijn.
How to act when you are in top shape mentally but the body doesn't respond that way? Bas, Roelof and Evert are physically handicapped. Nevertheless they embark on a 1000 km bike trip across the Himalayas. From Lhasa to Kathmandu conquering mountain passes over 5000 meters high what makes enormous physical and mental demands to the participants. Bas came into contact as a soldier with a high tension cable and can since then no longer walk. Roelof was soldier too. During his holiday he fell 6 meters with broken spine as a result. Evert the eldest one was scientist, until he accidently came under his own car, what led to partially paralyses and aphasia. The camera follows the three guys during their expedition, which leads according to Evert to the truth. That truth is hard to swallow for Bas, the soldier who doesn’t want to give up and wants to be an example for others. Bas can’t make it to the top of the highest climb because of the cold. Roelof gets to the top, he isn’t concerned about the physical obstacles, but worries about the future with his girlfriend. The journey of Evert is a romantic story: he shares his love for the mountains with his wife, like they did on their honeymoon before the accident. This bicycle excursion Himalaya marks their love, with a majestic panorama as a reward. THE CONQUEST OF HIGH PASSES is a moving portrait of people in search of their inner strength, during an excursion in a breathtaking landscape.
