Within the Marche du Films (Film Market), there is a small area called "Short Films Corner" where all of the short films are promoted and screened. At a corner of the "corner" there is a small desk where one may schedule an appointment to view some films. Behind the desk is a small cubicle-type of area with computers and headphones for people to view any short films at the festival. Each person with an appointment to view films is allowed one hour of viewing time.Short Films ...
The Cannes International Film Festival has almost nothing in common with the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and Hollywood, and yet, people tend to treat each other in the same way: every man for himself. When someone takes time out of their schedule to speak to you, knowing that you are not going to buy their movie or advance their career in some way, that person is someone who is worth talking to. This was the sort of situation that led me to Ken Feinberg, write...
Never mind the climate change – just look for shelter in our cinemas From June 6th on, the 23 rd International ShortFilmFestival Hamburg is screening more than 400 short filmsIt’s the beginning of May, and temperatures in Hamburg have already passed the 20°Celsius mark weeks ago. It’s conceivable that June weather will make it impossible not to walk the streets of our city bare-naked. This leaves you the choice of either turning into an exhibitionist or joining us in the coolness of our f...

Driven to the edge by his referee father, Bobby squares off against the winning teams golden boy not to mention Mr. Makefield's newest protege Tommy Johnson. The current plight of the Native American Film community was illustrated via mainstrean media in the April 11, 2007 edition of LA Weekly. Written against the context of the 10th anniversary of the critical and commercial success of "Smoke Signals," author Matthew Fleischer, delves into the complex struggles facing today's Native Filmmakers. From the usual suspects of funding and distrubution to the complexities of substantive storytelling, there appears to be a new wave of filmma...

There's nothing better than being able to attend screenings of films so diverse in their outlooks that it almost borders on the surreal. Now that Cinequest has concluded, and with this in mind, I would like to reflect upon couple more favorites of mine, Russell P. Marleau's The Curiosity of Chance, and Chris Power and Nathan Hynes' Long Pigs. The Curiosity of Chance is a hugely entertaining high school musical romp that is everything the John Hughes collection should have been. Russ M...

On Friday night I was treated to one of the strongest selections of twisted short films I have ever seen, Cinequest's Mindbenders. Not only were these films disturbing and extremely well produced, but the three directors I met personify everything that is great about independent filmmakers. This game is all about self-promotion, innovation and risk-taking, and Arthur, Ehran and Richard have these qualities in spades.Let's start with Arthur. Here's a fantastic example of self promotion...
Despite every good intention, it is not always possible to attend all the screenings during the ten days of Cinequest (due to real life getting in the way), so it was late in the evening when I finally swooped into Camera 12 to view the first of the short film programs, an eclectic group called 'Mirror, Mirror'.As I sat in the darkness, my face contorting into expressions of extreme joy or complete bewilderment, I marveled at the beauty of the short film format. There's a lot to be sa...
There is always an expectorant buzz surrounding San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival, and this 17th outing is no different. Following Halfdan's rabble rousing, and Mira Nair's stunning The Namesake, it was off to the Paragon for the opening salvoes of vodka laced networking. As a Brit, happily transplanted to California, I am especially interested in the European content on show here this year and, combining this with my love of short films, actively began my hunt for interesting filmma...

The members of the international short film jury awarded CONTACT the prize ‘for being a brilliant film on its approach to the subjects of love, anger and desperation. But you mustn’t forget to mention the humour of the film. We honour the ability of the director to show in a compact manner three angles of the same story.’Previously The Netherl...
