The members of the international Jury ofthe “Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film – Lion of the Future, in addition to its president, Italian director Saverio Costanzo, are:
· Hong Kong producer Roger Garcia, executive director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival since 2010 and a pioneer in the promotion and distribution of Asian cinema around the world
· French film critic and historian Natacha Laurent, director of the Cinémathèque de Toulouse for ten years until June 2015, an expert in Russian and Soviet cinema
· American director Charles Burnett, one of the most important independent American filmmakers, author of the cult film To Sleep with Anger (1990), winner of three Independent Spirit Awards
· Mexican journalist Daniela Michel, founder and director since 2003 of the Morelia Film Festival, the most important launching pad for young Mexican filmmakers.
The Jury will award, with no ex-aequo awards permitted, to one of the debut feature-length films from the various competition sections of the Venice Film Festival (Official Selection and Independent and Parallel Sidebars), the Lion of the Future – “Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film, with a cash prize of 100,000 USD donated by Filmauro, to be divided equally between the director and the producer.
Biographical notes“Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film
· Saverio Costanzo (President), Italian director. He made his debut feature film in 2004, entitled Private, which won the Golden Leopard award at the Locarno Film Festival and the David di Donatello for Best Debut Director. His next film, In memoria di me (In Memory of Me, 2007), presented in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, won two Nastri d’Argento. He has participated twice in the Venice Film Festival, both times in Competition: in 2010 with La solitudine dei numeri primi (The Solitude of Prime Numbers) and in 2014 with Hungry Hearts, a film that won both Coppa Volpi awards for Best Actress and Best Actor.
· Roger Garcia is a producer from Hong Kong, executive director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival since 2010 and a pioneer in the promotion and distribution of Asian cinema around the world. He has been a programmer, consultant and member of the jury for various international festivals and has written about cinema, collaborating among others with the British Film Institute, Cahiers du Cinéma and Variety. He began to work as a producer in the eighties promoting young filmmakers from Hong Kong and the Philippines. He has also worked for Hollywood and for independent films in Asia.
· Natacha Laurent, critic and film historian, was the director of the Cinémathèque de Toulouse for ten years, through June 2015. An expert in Russian and Soviet film, she has dedicated many publications to this subject, while her articles have appeared in the most important film magazines in France:1895, Vingtième Siècle, L’Histoire, Positif. In 2006 she was a member of the jury for the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2013 she was honoured with the prestigious French medal of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres.
· Charles Burnett, considered one of the most important independent filmmakers in the United States. Killer of Sheep (1978) was his dazzling debut in feature-length filmmaking, winning the Critics’ Award at the Berlin Film Festival and other important international acknowledgments. His other films include To Sleep with Anger (1990), winner of an award at the Sundance Film Festival and three Independent Spirit Awards, and The Glass Shield (1994), screened in competition at Locarno. His latest feature-length film is Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation (2007) with Danny Glover.
· Daniela Michel is the founder and director since 2003 of the Morelia Film Festival in Mexico, the most important launch-pad for young Mexican filmmakers and an event officially linked to the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival. As a film journalist, she has written for the most important newspapers in her country, and has hosted television programmes on the subject of cinema. She has served on the juries of many international film festivals including the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 in the Un Certain Regard section, and the Sundance Film Festival.
