SFFS Announces Fall Season Festival Lineups - Three Weekends in November at Vogue Theatre

French Cinema Now 2014

Three Film-Filled Weekends in November Bring the Latest Work from France, Hong Kong and Italy to Bay Area Audiences

The San Francisco Film Society has announced the full lineups for French Cinema Now (Nov 6 - 9), Hong Kong Cinema (Nov 14 - 16) and New Italian Cinema (Nov 19 - 23), the three festivals comprising its 2014 Fall Season. All festivals take place at the Vogue Theatre (3290 Sacramento Street). For complete Fall Season information, visit sffs.org.

An essential element of the San Francisco Film Society's year-round celebration of the best in contemporary world cinema, the Fall Season brings important new work to adventurous and inquisitive Bay Area audiences through in-depth explorations of three renowned filmmaking capitals. Fall Season attendees have the opportunity to gather and discover the latest output of Italy, Hong Kong and France, and immerse themselves in the film cultures of some of the world's most significant sources of great cinema.

Some of France's top acting talent -- including Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard, Alain Delon and the first onscreen pairing of Isabelle Huppert and Jean-Pierre Darroussin -- enlivens works by film masters, favorite figures from recent French Cinema Now and SF International Film Festival lineups, and exciting new directors in this year's celebration of all things French in film. This dynamic collection of contemporary and classic cinema takes audiences all over the world, from the heights of the Swiss Alps through the streets of Belgium to the banlieues of Paris, and has something for Francophile audiences of all tastes.

Hong Kong Cinema 2014

This year's edition of Hong Kong Cinema features an exciting mix of contemporary tales and rising pop stars with traditional yarns and household names. The program runs the genre gamut with enough action, romance, drama and thrills to satisfy all viewers. Included is one of the most celebrated films of the year, Ann Hui's The Golden Era, which closed the Venice Film Festival and is Hong Kong's foreign submission to the Academy Awards; a 20th anniversary screening of Wong Kar-wai's evergreen Chungking Express; new vehicles for Chow Yun-fat and Chapman To; the latest from directors Pang Ho-cheung and Fruit Chan; and much, much more.

New Italian Cinema 2014

The 18th annual New Italian Cinema offers several distinct elements in its competition section, including the first-ever animated feature shown by NICE, an Italian production entirely in Arabic and a suspense-oriented film in the giallo tradition, among other extremely impressive first or second features. Opening Night features a very special evening with Edoardo Ponti alongside Asia Argento's welcome return to the director's chair, and the festival closes with another of Paolo Virzì's expert delineations of class inequity.
