Bertolucci's 'The Last Emperor' Returns To Hollywood

A Tribute to Bertolucci Will Be Included in the 13th Edition of the LA, Italia Fest

LOS ANGELES, January 25 – Thirty years after its triumphant nine-Oscar romp, Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor” will be back in Hollywood for a special screening as part of the 13th edition of the Los Angeles, Italia – Film Fashion and Art Fest.  The 2018 festival will take place the week preceding the Oscars (February 25-March 2) at the Chinese Six Theatre complex at Hollywood & Highland, and will put Italian cinema in the spotlight through a series of premieres, screenings retrospectives and exhibitions.

''This is a heartfelt and fitting tribute to Bernardo Bertolucci, the Italian director who, in 1988, took Hollywood by storm,” said the festival’s founder and producer Pascal Vicedomini in making the announcement. “In 2008, for the twentieth anniversary of his masterpiece which won nine Academy Awards, the Capri in the World Institute arranged with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for him to receive a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And now, ten years later, another tribute to the legendary filmmaker seemed only fitting.”

“Bertolucci has been one of the few prestigious Italians to have received a Best Director Oscar,” Vicedomini continued. “In 1988, he received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, which he co-wrote with Mark Peploe, as well as a BAFTA for Best Picture, amongst many other honors.”

Vicedomini added: “It is important to note that the American critics and awards groups are once again paying attention to Italian filmmakers.  This is exactly what is happening today with Luca Guadagnino and his latest work ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ which is bound to receive multiple Oscar nominations tomorrow morning."

Bertolucci’s first Best Director nomination was in 1974 for “Last Tango in Paris,” but he didn’t strike gold until “The Last Emperor.” In addition to his Best Director win, the movie earned multiple Academy Awards for Best Picture (Jeremy Thomas), Best Writing (Bertolucci and Peploe), Best Cinematography (Vittorio Storaro), Best Art Direction - Set Decoration (Ferdinando Scarfiotti, Bruno Cesari, Osvaldo Desderi), Best Costume Design (James Acheson), Best Film Editing (Gabriella Cristiani), Best Sound (Ivan Sharrock, Bill Rowe) and Best Original Score (Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cong Su and David Byrne).

As is its long-standing tradition, Los Angeles, Italia will again bring a number of classic Italian movies to Hollywood including Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his masterpiece, along with some of today’s most successful and important Italian films.

The Los Angeles, Italia Film Fashion and Art Fest is presented by the Capri in the World Institute with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (DG Cinema) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles, ANICA and the ICE Audio-Visual Desk along with the participation of TATATU, AMBI Media Group, Mediaset, Rai Cinema, ISAIA, and the Institute of Italian Culture in Los Angeles.
