IM GLOBAL to Finance and Handle Global Sales for First-Ever Feature-Length Documentary on Music Legend CLIVE DAVIS
CLIVE DAVIS: THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES, based on Davis’ 2013 autobiography, The Soundtrack of My Life – which spent 10 weeks atop the New York Times Bestseller List -- will be directed by acclaimed documentary director and editor Chris Perkel (co-director The Town That Was, editor Pearl Jam 20) and produced by Scott Free Productions’ Michael Bernstein with Ridley Scott and Mary Lisio as executive producers. Ford and Schulhof will also serve as executive producers.
The film is a fascinating story of courage, resilience, talent and an unwavering commitment to excellence. These qualities drove Davis - a child of early 20th Century working-class Brooklyn who lost both parents while a teenager - to full academic scholarships to NYU and Harvard Law School and a brief but impactful stint as a white-shoe lawyer. His unrelenting drive to be the best, a twist of fate and the discovery that he had “Golden Ears” for hit music, led Davis to assume the presidency of Columbia Records at just 35 years of age, discover Janis Joplin at the Monterey Pop Festival shortly thereafter and command a career that has created the soundtrack for three generations of American culture.
"Clive Davis’ journey in music defines the last 50 years of contemporary music like no one else,” said Ford and Schulhof. “His compelling story is told through never-before-seen archival footage and Chris’ amazing and insightful interviews with the most culture-defining artists of our lifetime. Chris finds the soul of the man who masters his gift, reconciles business and music and leaves his mark on the world many times over. It is truly an inspiring journey and one loaded with the best music of the last five decades. It is a privilege for IM Global to be in business with Clive and our friends at Scott Free."
The film will examine how Davis rocketed to the top of the bare-knuckles music industry, repeatedly building colossal record labels (Columbia, Arista, J), at times becoming the subject of great controversy while overcoming enormous professional and personal challenges and tragedies. Davis has signed or played a key role in the careers of many of the most important music artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries. These include: Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Santana, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, Simon & Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Billy Joel, Earth Wind & Fire, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Rod Stewart, Sean “Puffy” Combs, The Kinks, The Grateful Dead and The Eurythmics. His annual Pre-Grammy Gala, which just turned 40, is always the hottest ticket of the year, drawing the biggest stars across music, film, television, industry and politics as well as business leaders and glitterati from around the world. The Gala will be prominently featured in the documentary.
A five-time Grammy winner, Davis has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is a recipient of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award. 06.05.2016 | Cannes Market Dailies's blog
