Sydney International Film Festival

The Official Competition celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2017, marking a decade of awarding the Sydney Film Prize to each year’s most 'audacious, cutting-edge and courageous' film. The competition is endorsed by FIAPF, the regulating body for international film festivals, and is judged by a jury of five international and Australian filmmakers and industry professionals. The $60,000 cash prize is presented at SFF’s Closing Night ceremony on Sunday 18 June. In 2016 a jury of five international and Australian filmmakers and industry professionals selected Aquarius, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, to receive the Sydney Film Prize.

Gourmet Cinema Food and Film at the Sydney Film Festival’s (7-18 June)

Gourmet Cinema, the Sydney Film Festival’s (7-18 June) perfect pairing of film and food will this year present the Australian premiere of Barbecue by Adelaide filmmaking duo Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker

A culinary and cultural exploration of the barbecue traditions across the globe, the film will be paired with an exquisite six-course gastronomic journey to locations explored in the film at The Meat & Wine Co following a screening at Dendy Opera Quays.

On the final weekend of the festival, South West Sydney audiences can enjoy a mouth-watering barbecue experience at BellbirdCasula Powerhouse.

“The film is an epic, succulent celebration of the tradition of barbecuing across the world: from South African braais and Texan pitmasters to a New Zealand hangi. Australian filmmakers Matthew Saleh and Rose Tucker travelled the globe to document barbecues in a diverse range of communities,” said Sydney Film Festival Documentary Programmer, Jenny Neighbour.

“From the Swedish engangsgrill, to refugees opening a sharwarma shop in a camp on the Syrian-Jordan border, the film shows that barbecuing isn’t just about the food,” she said.

All about the food, however, is The Meat & Wine Co’s six-course international barbecue feast featuring signature dishes from the Middle East, Japan, South Africa, USA, Argentina - plus dessert - with each course matched to select Eden Road Wines.

Award-winning Federico Rekowski, the new Venezuelan Head Chef at Casula Powerhouse’s Bellbird, has an exotic South American BBQ experience planned.

Communal seating at the Gourmet Cinema meals encourages shared conversations and experiences of the film and food presented. Film-only options are also available.

Sydney Film Festival also offers a range of Dining Delights with restaurant partners. Dining Delights provide great savings on regular menu prices at a delicious diversity of venues within easy reach of Festival screening locations.
