Cannes is over

user
After two crazy weeks, Cannes is now over. Most people are back home. A few are still there to finish editing their stories, videos, TV shows... I left Sunday to watch the award ceremony on TV. Awards, as always, were quite surprising. The Palme d'Or (see all videos) went to Ken Loach's the Wind that Shakes the Barley, not my own favorite. Surprisingly, no prize was awarded to Marie-Antoinette from Sophia Coppola nor for the Pan's Labyrinth from Guillermo Del Toro. See you soon... ...

San Francisco surprises and cherry blossoms

user
Surprises aren’t always a good thing in San Francisco. Exhaustive media coverage of the centennial of the 1906 great earthquake and fire—the defining event of the city’s history and biggest natural disaster in America until Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast last year—recently shook Bay Area residents with constant reminders that this is shake-rattle-and-roll country. On Saturday morning, Talk Cinema founder and former Film Comment editor Harlan Jacobson admitted to being a “ne...

The presentation of the Cannes selection

user
That is the most important question... and the answer is the most difficult to formulate. Cannes remains faithful to its principles, and the philosophy which leads the selection equally remains the same: highlighting auteur cinema, the search for singular voices in different cultures, qualities of direction, the practice of cinema as art, a world which recognises itself through the films screened. To this must be added the relationship between the state of cinema and that of its audiences, as we...
