The Viennale is taking its major anniversary – celebrating 50 years of the festival

The Viennale is taking its major anniversary – celebrating 50 years of the festival – as an opportunity to present a large number of special projects and activities. They will start in spring 2012 and will last until the end of the year. In addition, a series of international festivals and institutions will pay tribute to the Viennale’s anniversary with special programs.
As early as in April a

nd May, three important, international film festivals are paying homage to the Viennale with programs consisting of selected films from the Vienna festival’s 50-year history; works that represent the Viennale’s development and spirit in a special way.
The first to present a program in honor of the Viennale is the Buenos Aires International Film Festival (BAFICI), which started on April 11. Following suit are the Korean film festival of Jeonju, which takes place from April 26 to May 4, and the renowned Portuguese IndieLisboa at the end of April/beginning of May. Varying from festival to festival, the different programs include films by directors such as Vera Chytilová, Terayama Shuji, Wes Anderson, Nina Menkes, Ousmane Sembène, Luc Moullet, Rithy Panh, Valeska Grisebach, Ross McElwee and Agnès Varda.

In the following months, similar tributes are planned by festivals and institutions in Marseille, Munich and New York. “The Viennale is honored and proud about the great international acknowledgement expressed in such a multifaceted manner on the occasion of the festival’s anniversary,” says Viennale director Hans Hurch.
