FESTIVAL DO RIO ANNOUNCES 2013 AWARDS

Rio International Film Festival 2013. Presented by Ministério da Cultura, Governo do Rio de Janeiro, Secretaria de Estado de Cultura, Petrobras and Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro. Sponsored by RioFilme

Underage and Wolf At The Door share Redentor Trophy

Drawing to a close after 15 days of back-to-back screenings and hectic RioMarket activity, Festival do Rio, Latin America’s biggest annual celebration of cinema tonight handed out its closing night prizes given to films in the Premiere Brazil section which highlights new work by home grown filmmakers.

For this edition, awards were last minute moved to the festival’s downtown Armazem 6 dockland pavilion and given a Golden Globes supper lounge format instead of the traditional cinema set up of previous years during which the Odeon Petrobras cinema in Cinelandia was a fixed home to the prize giving ceremony.

Location move apart, the festival prize ceremony itself came up with one or two surprises, biggest of which was attached to the top award of the night.

For the first time in the history of the Festival, the fest’s pinacle award - Best Fiction Feature -was shared between two films.

The official jury chose to award its best national film of the year Redentor trophy jointly to Caru Alves de Souza’s De Menor (Underage) and O Lobo Atrás da Porta (Wolf At The Door) by Fernando Coimbra, both directors receiving their awards for their feature debuts.

Throughout the festival the buzz has suggested this year’s line-up has been one its strongest, and this sharing of the award would seem to be a certain indicator of the high level of creativity on show.

During the festival Coimbra’s dark psychological thriller O Lobo Atrás da Porta (Wolf At The Door) which follows three central figures in a child´s kidnapping – the father, the mother and the father´s mistress – was subject of strong critical attention for the performance of leading actress Leandra Leal. So it was not unexpected when Leal was handed the Best Actress prize, giving her the same trophy for a second year in a row. This time last year, Leal took the award for her work in director Bruno Safadi’s Eden. One of the industry’s most sought after actresses, Leal also has roles in a further three films featured in this year’s Premiere Brazil section.

For Best Director, the award was also shared, this time between two veterans working together for the first time: Cao Guimarães and Marcelo Gomes, for their film O Homem das Multidões (The Man of the Crowd), a Brazilian take on contemporary alienation loosely based on an 19th century Edgar Allan Poe story.

The best feature documentary of this year was Histórias de Arcanjo - Um Documentário sobre Tim Lopes (Stories of Arcanjo - a documentary about Tim Lopes), by Guilherme Azevedo and written by Bruno Quintella, son of the journalist murdered in 2002.

In terms of number of awards, another big winner of the night was screenwriter turned director Hilton Lacerda, whose first step as director, Tatuagem (Tattoo), earned two trophies - for Best Actor (Jesuíta Barbosa) and Best Support Actor (Rodrigo García) as well as receiving the 2013 Fipresci award for Best Latin American Film in the festival and the Public Vote award for Best Film in the Festival.

Best Screenplay was awarded to Entre Nós (Sheep's Clothing) by Paulo Morelli, which also brought home the Best Supporting Actress award for featured actress Martha Nowill ; Best Editing went to Estrada 47 (Road 47), by Vicente Ferraz; and Best Photography to Quase Samba (Lyrics), by Ricardo Targino, among other prizes given.

Prizes in the Novos Rumos (New Trends) section were presented to Tão Longe É Aqui (Here Is So Far) by Eliza Capai for Best Film, and Best Short award to Todos Esses Dias Em Que Sou Estrangeiro (All These Days When I Am Foreign) by Eduardo Morotó.
