Panorama 2013: First Films and Programmes

Now that scouting trips to find films for the Panorama have been concluded, viewings in Berlin are in full swing. “A third of the programme has already been selected,” reports Panorama director Wieland Speck. “Alongside works by European filmmakers, such as Lars Kraume and Felix van Groeningen, films from Asia – and especially from Korea – have made a deep impression. This is also true of works from Latin America, which is alone contributing four directorial debuts.” Speck then wraps up by saying, “there are also films from the USA with such renowned names as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julianne Moore, Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman, Amanda Seyfried, Juno Temple and Noah Baumbach.”

Many of the documentaries have what it takes for the big screen. They are on explosive international issues, such as Palestine and the Middle East in State 194 and Alam laysa lana (A World Not Ours); or they attempt to come to terms with the past in Indonesia, as in The Act of Killing. The film Gut Renovation focuses on the rapid advance of gentrification in Western countries. And a portrait is dedicated to one of the most inspirational figures of German cinema: Roland Klick. The Panorama Dokumente series will make up about one third of the entire programme.

Heiner Carow Prize: A new award for Panorama films
The DEFA Foundation will award this prize that has been conceived to promote German cinematic art to a documentary, fictional or essay film. The winner will receive 5,000 euros. The prize will go to a film that employs extraordinary aesthetic means to deal with social and political issues, past or present.

TEDDY AWARD
As in 2010, the TEDDY Award Gala 2013 will take place at Station Berlin, and will be followed by a late night show and party. Performers include Rufus Wainwright, who can also be seen in Lian Lunson’s Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You - A Concert for Kate McGarrigle, which is screening in the Panorma Dokumente. In 2006 Lunson presented his film Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man in the Panorama.
This year’s TEDDY jury will have nine members. They are festival organizers from Taiwan, the USA, Finland, Mexico, France, Spain, Ukraine, the Dominican Republic and India.
