Photographic Memories: My Many Days and Nights at the Toronto International Film Festival

It's hard to believe, but this month the Toronto International Film Festival will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Milestones like this always make for a good excuse to pause and reflect, especially for Torontonians of my generation who grew up in the 1970s and 80s. The great thing about being a film fanatic living in Toronto back then was the sheer selection of movies you could see on any day of the week. The city had a huge number of cinema screens relative to its population, equal to, if...

Juliano Ribeiro Salgado Talks Oscar-nominated Doc "The Salt of the Earth"

You've seen Sebastiaõ Salgado's photographs. A gold miners' strife in his native Brazil, genocide in Rwanda, war in Yugoslavia, famine in Ethiopia and incinerated oilfields in Kuwait -- his imagery across four decades and a hundred countries is iconic. But you may not be so familiar with the photographer. The Salt of the Earth, directed by Wim Wenders together with Sebastiaõ's son, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, gives you that chance. Take it.  Observ...

Black & White - International Audiovisual Festival

In May Porto opens its doors to the monochromatic aesthetics. The Black & White - International Audiovisual Festival, which receives video, audio and photographs in black and white, will take into competition works from all over the world.
With unique worldwide characteristics this initiative grew from the need to answer to the audience's growing sensitivity to black & white specificity, leaving behind the prejudice that relates this aesthetics with works of early cinema.
But the festival shows more than videos and photos in two colours, it also encourages the creation of sound environments referring to the black and white.
Over four days, several activities related to the audiovisual world will be carried out in addition to the competitions: artist talks, screenings and extensions from other international festivals. The nights will also be exciting with a broad cultural program.

"More Than the Rainbow": Street Photographer Matt Weber Gets His Close-Up

There are eight million stories in the naked city, and street photographer Matt Weber has captured thousands of them. His own story is the focus of Dan Wechsler's engaging documentary More Than the Rainbow. Weber became smitten with street scenes sometime during his 12 years as a New York cab driver. In 1990 his then wife, Laurie Weber, convinced him to jettison the Medallion and chase his dream of becoming the Henri Cartier-Bresson of Gotham. "You're photographing things ...

"Finding Vivian Maier": A Detective Movie

With all due respect to Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the distinction of true detective must go to history sleuth John Maloof, whose documentary Finding Vivian Maier smokes out one of the art world's most intriguing tales. Together with fellow director/producer Charlie Siskel, Maloof set about making sense of the late street photographer's life and work, ultimately launching her name among the pantheon of outsider artists. It's hard to imagine a less likely candidate for...

Punto y Raya Junior 2012

Punto y Raya Junior

Dear friends of Punto y Raya,

It is a pleasure to inform you that we're launching the version of our festival, made FOR and BY children aged 6 to 12 years.
Following the same spirit that has earned us the title of "Most abstract festival in the World", this edition will host the same kind of activities as the "adult" one (calls for entries, workshops, screenings, installations, exhibitions and live PyRformances) under the motto "No representation, only dots and lines".

The CALLS FOR ENTRIES are currently open, and the selected works will compete for the Jury and Audience Awards.

SHORT FILM Call for entries: abstract short films experimenting with dots and lines in various contexts. All techniques are welcome; maximum running time is 6 minutes and the soundtrack cannot feature articulated words. View the eligibility criteria

PHOTOGRAPHY Call for entries: abstract photography experimenting with dots and lines in various contexts. All formats and techniques are welcome. View the eligibility criteria

Submissions are free and can be made online. Deadline: August 15th, 2012

The first edition of Punto y Raya Junior will take place on November 10th & 11th 2012 at the CCCB (Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona) with free admission.
And from March through October, we'll be organizing for children at various associated venues. We'll post all the details soon.

For those who still don't know Punto y Raya, this multidisciplinary festival studies the essence of the artistic expression; it uses the minimum grains of all representation systems (the dot and the line) as ends in themselves, inviting creators and audiences to explore the artistic experience in its purest state: form, color, motion, tension and sound. Punto y Raya subscribes to the spirit of "Art for Art's sake"; that unique experience that only abstraction can encompass in all its dimensions.

For more information regarding our three "adult" editions, please visit our website.

Eagerly awaiting the children's works,

Warm regards,

MAD :)

Arthur premier in Sydney, Australia: Russell Brand mania goes wild, by Eva Rinaldi - 15th April 2011

user
Bondi Junction's Westfield - Event Cinema to be precise, was swamped by thousands of fans and dozens of photographers, paparazzi and security guards from 7pm earlier today.          Brand, now frequently billed as the 'world's funniest man', was in fine form and was extremely generous with fans and the press, frequently stopping to chat on his slow walk down the red carpet. I hear Mr Brand is off the drugs and booze - at least the hard ...

The Next Three Days: My First Red Carpet As A Photographer, by Eva Rinaldi - 30th January 2011

user
It was my first time doing the red carpet as a professional photographer. You can just imagine how exciting it was. Doing something the first time is special. You know, getting your First drivers license, kissing, making love, giving birth and you get the picture. Today I had the privilege and pleasure of shooting 'The Next Three Days', a drama staring my friend Russell Crowe. The shoot wasn't without incident either, such is the often the case i...
