A film by Cem Kaya
Germany 2022
Documentary, 96 Min.
filmfaust, Film Five and Rapid Eye Movies are very pleased to announce that AŞK, MARK VE ÖLÜM (LOVE, DEUTSCHMARKS AND DEATH) by Cem Kaya has won the Audience Award in the category Panorama Documents. The prize is awarded by the Berlinale Panorama section together with radioeins and rbb Fernsehen (Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg).
"I would like to thank the audience and the Berlinale! Our film tells 60 years of music and cultural history of migrants from Turkey, but also 60 years of German history of discrimination. Today is the second anniversary of the racist attack in Hanau with nine deaths and many injured. My deepest sympathy to all bereaved families. It is difficult to be happy about an award on such a day. But it gives me courage, strength and hope," says director Cem Kaya.
Cem Kaya's rousing and exciting documentary celebrates 60 years of music by migrants from Turkey in Germany and sparked enthusiasm among the Berlinale audience. An alternative post-war history and at the same time a musical Who-Is-Who, from Yüksel Özkasap to Derdiyoklar to Muhabbet.
Rapid Eye Movies plans to release the film in German cinemas in autum 2022. Taskovski Films is handling international rights except German speaking countries.
The winner of the Panorama documentary film award will be shown on Sunday, February 20, at 9:00 p.m. in Zoo Palast 1 on the last Berlinale day. The Panorama Audience Award has been presented since 1999. Since 2011, both the best feature film and the best documentary film are honored. During the Berlinale, all moviegoers are asked to vote for the films in the Panorama section. A total of over 8000 votes were cast and evaluated.

The independent and hitherto hardly known music world of immigrants from Turkey is unique in this form for Germany. It has a great cultural heritage, both for the (old) Federal Republic and for the Germany of today. It reaches into the present and beyond. AŞK, MARK VE ÖLÜM (LOVE, DEUTSCHMARKS AND DEATH) contains this treasure, makes it accessible to a German-speaking and international audience. In addition, the film opens up new perspectives on politically and socially relevant topics such as belonging, identity and participation. Director Cem Kaya wrote the screenplay together with Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay who also produced the film.
