The man with the golden camera. I first noticed photographer Antonio Castello during a press conference, due to his old-timey looking camera with a golden vintage lens. He captured over two thousand photos over the course of the massive eleven-day film festival. Looking through his snaps of festival director Di...
In Lynne Ramsay's kidnapping thriller They Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix plays a veteran named Joe who has been working under the table as a hired gun, rescuing young girls from sex trafficking rings. After he is hired to save a senator's daughter, Nina, played by Ekaterina Samsonov, he uncovers a plot of corruption and violence.
Lynne Ramsay has created an atmospheric and intense thriller that is unlike any other in the genre. She juxtaposes beautifu...
Last night was the red carpet showing of Aus Dem Nichts or In The Fade, by it's english title. The film was directed by Faith Akin and starred Diane Kruger as a woman who had just lost her son and husband in a vicious bomb attack set by unknown enemies. Throughout the film, Katja (Kruger) is faced with judgement and scrutiny not only from the police, but also her loved ones, making her period of mourning all taht more difficult.
Diane Kruger delivers such a powerful performance as the p...
Last night, I had the oppurtunity to attend the red carpet premiere of the French/Austrian film, Happy End, directed by Michael Haneke and starring Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz, Toby Jones, and the young Ms. Fantine Harduin.
Happy End is a heartbreaking and introspective story that follows a young girl, Eve (Harduin), who ends up living with her estranged father (Kassovitz) and his wealthy family after her mother attempts suicide. It...

Takashi Miike's 'Blade of the Immortal' is premiering tonight at the Cannes Film Festival. Screening at 22:30, with stars gathered in their best gowns and suits, the premiere of this film is eagerly anticipated.
To understand the excitement, here is a synopsis:
Based on the Manga of the same name first published in 1993, the film evokes the story of an immortal samurai warrior who can lift his curse by only one way: kill 1,000 men ...

Once again I had the pleasure of attending the Red Carpet event at the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival this month. There were several stars in attendance. Aside from the local celebrities like Chaz Ebert and Michael Kutza there were some big names: French director Claude Lelouch, French actress Valerie Perrin, actor Chin Han from Singapore, actor Michael Rooker, director John McNaughton and last but not least Geraldine Chaplin.

The 2016 San Diego International Kids Film Festival ( SDIKFF) completed its mission on August 28, in the American Spirit Theater at Escondido, CA. The extra long corridor covered with beautiful vines on the top to create shade, the red carpet on the paths to create the glamour, in between, those beautiful people from worldwide were walking on the red carpet with proud and honor to represent their films. At the hallway of the theater, every film makers signed their name ...

Raise your hand if you saw Al Pacino in "Danny Collins." Raise your hand if you saw Al Pacino in "Danny Collins" and actually liked it. Okay, kidding aside, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced their nominations today at 5:15 am PST, which left a few of us critics cranky. But not without the usual clear-eyed objections to the Golden Globes' mash-up of categories. Is "Joy" a comedy? Is "T...

If you walk out onto the croisette at any given point during the festival, you may see even a hundred people with a piece of paper in their hands. All of them say the same thing in a different way - I need an invitation. For those not familiar, in order to enter the Grand Theatre Lumiere, you need an invitation and these are always seemingly hard to come by. In this spectacular 2,500+ seated audtorium, the main films are played, specfically those that are in the running for the Palme D'Or....
Camerado's original supernatural Asian historical dramatic movie, FREEDOM DEAL: The Story of Lucky, set along the Cambodia-Vietnam border in 1970 during the Vietnam conflict, continues to enjoy popular support and appreciation internationally - and on the ground in Cambodia in well.
A series of October 2014 sidewalk and street screenings in Phnom Penh and in the rural Cambodian countryside, demonstrated conclusively a striking level of popular local support for this pion...
Celebrities such as HIlary Swank, Sonam Kapoor, Adriana Lima, and The Homesman director Tommy Lee Jones turned out on the red carpet to dazzle before the Premiere of Jones' film.

Over the years, I'd had it. Having worked/volunteered for film festivals for more than a decade, it became increasingly clear that a cancer had reared its ugly head. The observation I made was nothing short of sycophant society hell bent on being seen and/or canoodling with some celebrity. To me, these over-stuffed bras, deluxe Botox, label wearing women and men show up at events like ugly girls accompanied to the prom by a paid-off neighbor. Everyone knows, but no one says anything.
