Tuesday night was a rare opportunity to see him in a conversation with David Ansen, the new Artistic Director of LAFF. Building A Bridge To Peace

user
What one of the great benefits (and joys) of an event like the AFI-Discovery Channel Documentary Festival is the presentation of films that go behind the news headlines and offer a portrait of the complexity and urgency of political and social events. The simple idea behind many of the films here is that the more we know, the more we understand, the more we can do. In the case of finding solutions to some of the world's most complicated issues, none is more pressing than the need t...

When is a boondoggle not a boondoggle?

user
A lot of people in the advertising business think of a boondoggle the way the Supreme Court thinks of porn –– they can't define it, but they know it when they see it. I don't think it's that hard to draw the line. It all comes down to responsibility. If you're doing something you honestly intend to help your client, you're not engaging in boondogglery. If you're doing something for your own personal gratification at the expense of your client, you are. Take me, for exam...

New York City International Film Festival To Debut in Times Square

user
Times Square may have dodged a car bomb, but now another explosive event is being planned for New York's theater district that's sure to go off. Expect sizzle and smoke August 12 to 19, 2010, when the New York City International Film Festival gets its launch in tourism ground zero. I just came back from two hours with the man who's behind the plot. Manhattan already has the New York Film Festival and the Tribeca and Gen Art -- whoops, not Gen Art -- and 50 or so other movie pageants, but ...

Provincetown International Film Festival Brings Warm Tides

The year America's oldest art colony turned 100, it reckoned it couldn't start another century without a cinema fete. Thus was born the Provincetown International Film Festival. The Festival will once again salute "new achievements in independent film…and the work of acclaimed and emerging directors, producers and actors," as per its website. Not a peep about writers, which is the bailiwick of the N...

Where And What Is Zlin?

With less than 2 weeks to go until the 50th anniversary celebrations begin for the ZLIN FILM FESTIVAL, the first major film  event following CANNES, the question I am hearing from associates is: where and what is Zlin? Well, let me answer that with some relevant information on a city both historic and modern. Zlin is a city situated in the southeastern Moravian district of what is now the Czech Republic. The Autobiography by Nicolae Ceausescu by Andrei Ujica

It is a mere question of aesthetic level, whether he turns out to be Baudelaire or Bolintineanu, Louis XVI or Nicolae Ceaușescu.” Andrei Ujică During the summary trial that he and his wife were submitted to, Nicolae Ceaușescu is reviewing his long reign in power: 1965-1989. Truth Lies Beneath

Director: Gautam Sen.
It was the day of Deepavali, festival of lights… When others were busy in celebrating the sounds and lights of the festival, a girl named Mousumi Ari, of seventeen years of age, was being tortured in her in-laws house. She was murdered eventually. Mousumi hailed from the family of a poor fisherman in Narayanpur village, Kakdwip, 24 Parganas, India and was married to a boy of her village, at the age of barely sixteen. Her father-in-laws, Swadesh Ari was a home guard in the local Kakdwip Police Station. After her marriage she fell prey to the wrath of her in-laws and was subjected to torture regularly. On the day of Deepavali, she was murdered by Swadesh Ari and his family members. The administration not only remained mute. An unholy nexus of the police, hospital-morgue authority and legal administration tried to veil the culprits… to establish the murder as a case of suicide. They wiped out the trace of murder and twisted the events to suite their choice. Apprehending the caucus of some vested interested, Sukumar Sahu, Laxmi Sahu, the parents of Mousumi and their relatives did not cremated the dead body of Mousumi but buried it under the earth in quest of justice. The film depicts the victim’s voice, so far unheard and the experience of the rights activists stood by the side of the victim family…. narrating what happened actually and explores the eventually of Mousumi’s murder.

The heroes Gentelev was referring to are three retired godfathers of Russia’s underworld who muse about their colorful exploits on camera.
