Presentation of the ANIMATED COM AWARD 2011 in Stuttgart

The best advertising clips and applied animation 2011 are characterised by
perfect illusions, humour and technical finesse For some it is advertising, for
others the shortest feature films in the world. Despite being so apparent in
everyday life, applied animation has established itself almost unnoticed as an
independent genre somewhere between Hollywood blockbusters and artistic short
films. The ANIMATED COM AWARD pays tribute to this development at the 18th
Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film. This evening the award was presented to
the best productions worldwide in the field of applied animation at the
Württemberg Kunstverein (art society).

Altogether there were 82 entries to the competition. From those the four
members of the jury nominated three top-class films for each of the categories
advertising and technology, before choosing an overall winner. Today the
winners were presented with their awards at an award ceremony in the presence
of numerous national and international guests.

The winner in the category
Advertising
is: Compare the Market with "Compare the Market 'Streets of
Ambitiousness'"
, Passion Pictures, Great Britain

Jury member, Thomas Meyer-Hermann (Studio Film Bilder, Stuttgart) justified the
jury’s decision as follows: "It
is a challenge to produce vital advertising for a website which compares car
insurance. This spot manages to transform an extremely dry subject into a
cinematic, humorous treat"
.

The victor in the category
Technology
is: Firaxis Games/ 2K Games with "Civilization V",
Digi Pictures, Hungary In the words of Thomas Meyer-Hermann "The
film demonstrates the effective use of CGI (Computer Generated Images). It is
an – almost – perfect illusion, which allows players to plunge into another
world and another time."

Creatives from France received the main
prize
: Amnesty International with "Death Penalty",
Warm&Fuzzy, France.

Thomas Meyer-Hermann explained the jury’s decision thus: "We are awarding the main prize
for a first class visualisation idea, realised with technical finesse, formal
elegance and convincing content".

The awards were presented by representatives of the ANIMATED COM AWARD’s
partners; the Fraunhofer Institut IPA, Mackevision, Kolbenschmidt Pierburg and
Netformic. The evening was emceed by Rainer Jilg (ZDF Kulturkanal) and Jazz
singer Natscha Roth provided the musical accompaniment. At the next Animated
Com Award the categories will be extended to include "animation in
space". The film installation "Aida" (That's opera) presented by
the company Jangled Nerves at this year’s ceremony was an excellent example of
this.
