Kalamunda's Zig Zag Festival returns this Spring

The annual Zig Zag Festival has been a renowned celebration of community creativity and as a showcase for arts and heritage in the Perth Hills for over thirty years. After being rested for consultation and review, a reinvigorated festival will once again bring the carnival atmosphere back in a bigger and better way.

Festival co-director Celia Cheffins said the festival had been transformed.

"This is a community gathering that celebrates everything that is good about Kalamunda. It will bring the community together as never before.”

A crowd of 20,000 is expected to descend upon Stirk Park area and the extended festival footprint of Haynes Street into the central business district.

Highlights of the Act-Belong-Commit Zig Zag Community Arts Festival include:

  • Five stages packed with live music giving a taste of summer, headlined by Odette Mercy and her Soul Atomics
  • Local artist exhibitions
  • Fun family attractions with face painting, a kids zone, petting zoo and loads of free activities in Stirk Park
  • Plenty of retail therapy with local business specials and market stalls
  • Roving entertainers and a five metre tall fire breathing dragon

Local schools will feature prominently in the Festival as the Train of Thought parade makes its way to the Main Stage to battle their final villain. To do this they need to join forces with local musicians to perform a mega anti-bully mash-up. This performance will be the fruition of months of workshops with local  students, supported by Act-Belong-Commit as an extension of their community based programs advocating for strong local communities which improve mental health for residents.

City of Kalamunda Mayor John Giardina said it was fantastic to see the community come together in this way.

"We’ve got a jam-packed program with something for all interests. It’s sure to be an amazing day and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

The Act-Belong-Commit Zig Zag Community Arts Festival is hosted by the City of Kalamunda and presented by Zig Zag Community Arts and supported by Healthway, Lotterywest and Perth Airport.

A full program for the Act-Belong-Commit Zig Zag Community Arts Festival will be released at a later date.
