AFI FEST DAILY NEWS, Day 9

You know what today is? It's Friday—the weekend! And you can quite happily spend all of it attending the films and events at AFI FEST.

There's no better way to start than with the Festival's Tribute to Danny Boyle and the Special Screening of his latest film, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

But we have alternatives: Special Screenings of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's SUGAR and Arnaud Desplechin's A CHRISTMAS TALE, a big block of films in the World Cinema section, competition films in the Documentary and Narrative categories and shorts.

That's just the lineup for today. Visit the Daily News online and plan the rest of your weekend. We'll keep you busy with TALK/SHOWS, free screenings, two Galas and Sunday's awards brunch.

Fun! Fun! Fun!

What you need to know:
Tribute to Danny Boyle and the Special Screening of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE:

When: 7 p.m., film screening immediately after Tribute
    Where: ArcLight Hollywood 10
    Tickets: Rush Line only

Press: Red Carpet check-in, 5:30 p.m. at Club Sushi

AFI FEST BEST BETS
Can't decide what to see? We'll make it easy for you. Try these:

Shorts Program 4—Amuse Bouche: Nine films to nosh on that will have you rolling in the aisles, rolling your eyes and rolling over to tan your backside.

Shorts Program 5—Worldviews: The intrepid and adventurous AFI FEST programmers have selected five films that take you on a quick trip around the globe.

A GOOD DAY TO BE BLACK & SEXY: Dennis Dortch's smart, sensuous debut explores the balance of power in the tug of war between the genders. Set in Los Angeles over the course of one day, the film is composed of six vignettes about the intimate territory of sexual desire as played out in bedrooms, kitchens and the back seats of cars.

LA RABIA: The farmers of Argentina's endless pampas are as rough and bristly as the arid landscape that is their home. Circumstances force them to share and help one another. But sometimes emotions can erupt like a summer storm..

3 WOMEN: Anchored by Niki Karimi's stunning performance as Minoo, a lonely single mother struggling to balance familial responsibility, career and her own search for meaning, acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Manijeh Hekmat's film is part road movie, part fable and part family drama.
