The festival was created in July 2005 from the Association of Cinematographic and Audiovisual Sax (ACAS) and the idea of the founder of the association and the local young filmmaker Miguel Herrero Herrero. 10 Coolest Animated Music Videos

user
by Ariana Marsh Admittedly, before I started working for ÉCU my knowledge of music video genres was embarrassingly narrow. I was well versed in those that included catchy dance routines, the most bizarrely couture fashions, sickeningly impossible romantic love stories, and even those including all of the above PLUS million dollar cars, models and miraculous weather that rained cash. Basically, MTV had been my music video education. However, after poking around on v...

Interview with Rita Broka winner of Best European Independent Documentary with her film "M Ferma"

user
ÉCU – The European Independent Film Festival 2012 hosted its 7th edition, March 30th through April 1st where “M Farm” won Best European Documentary. Rita Broka worked as a journalist for an evening news programme called “Panorama,” a 90′s patriotic talkshow in Latvia.  Now she feels she has fully become a “film person.” This was especially felt after the National Film Centre in Latvia raised hope and mentioned they would honor several films  produced by Broka. ...

By Alexander Acosta Osorio Q: Where does the inspiration for your short come from? A: Usually my inspiration comes from places I visit or just an image that sticks in my memory. ECU Film Festival - Day Three

user
It's about a quarter past four on the third day of the film festival and, due to a slight delay in scheduling, director Alan Arrivée is fielding questions about his film, The Man at the Door, from the audience members assembled outside the Action Christine cinema.  Ostensibly about the intrusion of an apparently threatening Mexican immigrant into the tightly locked home of a recently separated American woman, for Arrivée the film is a metaphor for relations between Mexico and ...

ECU Film Festival Day Two - Part Two

user
It's nearly one am on the night of the second day of the ECU Film Festival, and while Belgian musician, Karim Baqqili, spins out some wild gypsy jazz on an oud, Patrick Chadwick is talking to me about Icelandic weather patterns.   We're milling around at the after-party at Les Voutes Saint Paul after a long day of screenings. The wine is flowing, in another room somewhere in this strangely cavernous place people are dancing to MGMT with champagne flutes in...

ECU Film Festival - Day Two

user
It's about a quarter to one on the second day of the festival and Pablo Tourrenc has just revealed to a room full of school children that Kid Cudi is habitually four or five hours late to turn up on the set of his video shoots. This is a fact that they will keep with them and treasure, spreading it around the playground like a bad case of measles. Pablo's been taking us through the basics of budgeting, scheduling and on-set parking - with a helpful reminder to always be prepared fo...

ÉCU 2012 FILM FESTIVAL DAY ONE

user
ÉCU 2012 FILM FESTIVAL DAY ONE It’s nearly half past six on the evening of the first day of the seventh European Independent Film Festival. Strains of smoky jazz, a snaking baritone sax line, filters through from the trio set up in the festival foyer, making its way to the little marquee where, even now,  film-makers are assembling for the welcome glass of wine or vitamin water. Amongst the group festival president, Scott Hillier, will later refer to as a “crazed bunch ...

Journalist, Hermann Djoumessi, gives his impression about the festival:

HERMANN DJOUMESSI, a journalist for Vingt Paris and The Guardian, swung by the social media counter to give us his thoughts about the festival.    "I really enjoyed how filmmaker friendly the festival is. You can actually touch them," Djoumessi cheerily comments. This is Djoumessi's second festival. He loves the feeling that surrounds the event. The ability to watch films and then immediately after talk to the director is phenomenal and is a pleasurable experience to ...

About ÉCU-The European Independent Film Festival

Hillier Scott
(ECU)

Scott Hillier, Founder and President of ÉCU - The European Independent Film Festival

Scott Hillier is a director, cinematographer, and screenwriter, based in Paris, France. In the last 20 years, Hillier has gained international recognition from his strong and incredible cinematography, editing, writing, producing and directing portfolio in both the television and film industries.

Scott began his career in the television industry in Australia. In 1988, he moved to London getting a job with the BBC who then set him to Baghdad. This opportunity led him to 10 years of traveling around world for the BBC, mainly in war zones like Somalia, Bosnia, Tchetcheynia, Kashmir, and Lebanon. After a near fatal encounter with a Russian bomber in Tchechnyia, Hillier gave up his war coverage and began in a new direction.

He moved to New York City in 1998.  He directed and photographed eight one-hour documentaries for National Geographic and The Discovery Channel. Based on his war knowledge and experience, Hillier wrote and directed a short film titled, “Behind the Eyes of War!" The film was awarded “Best Short Dramatic Film” at the New York Independent Film and TV Festival in 1999. From that he served as Supervising Producer and Director for the critically acclaimed CBS 42 part reality series, "The Bravest” in 2002 and wrote and directed a stage play called, "Deadman’s Mai l," which ran at Le Théâtre du Moulin de la Galette in Paris during the summer of 2004. He then became the Director of Photography on a documentary titled, “Twin Towers." This was yet another life changing experience for Hillier. The riveting documentary won an Academy Award for "Best Documentary Short Subject" in 2003. In 2004, Hillier changed continents again, spending three months in Ethiopia. He produced “Worlds Apart,” a pilot for ABC America / True Entertainment / Endemol. As you can see, Hillier was and is always in constant movement and enjoys working in a number of diverse creative areas including documentaries, music videos, commercials, feature and short films.

Scott studied film at New York University and The London Film and Television School. He also studied literary non-fiction writing at Columbia University. Hillier's regular clients include the BBC, Microsoft, ABC, PBS and National Geographic. Between filming assignments, he used to teach film, a Masters Degree course in Screenwriting at the Eicar International Film School in Paris, France and journalism at the Formation des Journalistes Français in Paris, France.
