International Cellphone Cinema Showcase in Cannes scheduled July 13 at Eden Hotel Theater
On the 13th of July at 3:00 pm at the Eden Hotel Theater the INTERNATIONAL CELL PHONE CINEMA SHOWCASE – CANNES will screen, in conjunction with the Marche du Film, a collection of Award Winner shorts from Mobile Phone Festivals from around the world. To project cell phone films on the large screens of theaters is no longer a surprise. After all, one of the leading filmmakers of Hollywood, Steven Soderbergh, has been making full length mobile phone features with well-known actors for commercial distribution - starting with his highly dramatic mobile film: “Unsane.”
Sean Baker, an alumnus of NYU Film School, had also made a widely popular mobile phone feature, Tangerine, in Hollywood, mixing real life transsexuals with some professional actors.
As the main theme of the current Cannes Film Festival is the Environment, our Showcase features films that focus on the Environment. For the first time, the Winners of the Shoot4Earth Film Marathon will be shown in Cannes.Headquartered in Hungary, it’s a unique International Competition that required to make one-minute films in 24 hours -connected to Earth Day in April 24, 2021. The President of the current International Jury was the Oscar Winner film director, Istvan Szabo, Vice President, Dr. Sandeep Marwah, Director of the Asian Film and Television Academy in Film City, Noida, India, and Artistic Director, Prof. Karl Bardosh of NYU. The Founder/Program Director is Gabor Kindl, Hungary. This year’s Filmmaking Marathon’s Special Award was “In Loving Memory of Jiri Menzel” - the Oscar Winner Czech film director who had been President of the Jury several times since this global filmmaking competition started in 2004 named as DIGI24. It has called for shorts to be made in 24hours with small digital cameras including telephones. It was the first of this kind of competition in the world followed by many others: 24, 48 and 72 hour filmmaking competitions. The first Presidents of the Jury of our DIGI24 in 2004 were the Cannes Best Director Winner, Miklos Jancso and the Oscar Nominated Director, Karoly Makk, both legendary directors recognizing that DIGI24 was another step in democratizing filmmaking like the legendary Dogma-95 was in Cannes in 1995.
Some of our one-minute films in the current film marathon are not only addressing important issues of our Earth, but also offer actual solutions to protect us like one by the independent filmmaker Zoi Florosz, whose short: Delicate Balance introduces the SpaceHarmony-Sytem’s devices to decrease the electromagnetic radiation from cellphones and their 5G towers. All in all, the 1-minute films of this program are not only presenting serious environmental issues but the films are also very fast moving and entertaining.www.shoot4earth.org
Also, for the first time, the Winner of the Best Film at the Blue Water Film Festival will be shown in Cannes - a touching story of a soccer team from Ghana that started a program to protect the Ocean. And another one -shot with a phone- featuring a middle-aged woman, who instead of retirement moved to St. John’s to do underwater snorkeling to document the pollution of the Ocean.
In addition to protecting the physical Environment, there are other films about the Intellectual Environment, like a film about 3 Russian Mathematicians turning into Artists in New York, and another narrative short, by the American-Hungarian actress/director Lili Bordan - whose mother Iren, the greatest film star of Hungary and now the star of a new Netflix series. This moving intellectual short -also shot in New York- is about the memories of an intercontinental love-affair decades ago.
Important part of the Showcase is a collection of Award Winners from the widely popular International Mobile Film Festival of North Macedonia with almost a thousand shorts each year, represented by Vesna Ristovska -this time praying tribute to the founder of this 10 years old festival, Dimitar Mikolov, who has just passed away.
Prof. Max Schleser, sent in some of the top shorts from his film festival in Australia. He has been teaching Mobile Phone Filmmaking for the past 10 years.
Tianyuan He, an alumna of the NYU Film School, has started a prestigious Film Society in Beijing and entered some Award Winner shorts from her Filmmaking Workshop in China.
Also from China, there are mobile shorts from the Eureka Program that prepares Chinese students for admissions to American Film Schools.
Of course, there are mobile shorts from North and South America as well.
This exciting International Showcase is also part of Princess Angelique Monet’s World Peace and Tolerance Initiative that has been inviting to Cannes features and shorts of Humanitarian Purpose for the past 10 years. In the past 3 years, her Event has been presenting the Karl Bardosh Humanitarian Cell Phone Cinema Awards for the Best features and Shorts made on mobile phones.
The Global Short Film Awards – Cannes by Andres Aquino has also been awarding -in the past 3 years- the best achievements in Mobile Phone Filmmaking. As a new Category this has been introduced and headed up by Artistic Director, Prof. Karl Bardosh. http://globalshortfilmawards.com/mobile-cinema-2020/
Our International Cell Phone Cinema Showcase – a festival of mobile film festivals presents the whole spectrum of genres from narrative to documentary, animation to experimental films by anyone, as the mission of Cell Phone Cinema is the democratization of media by a tiny but very capable camera in our pockets. Thus, the motto of our International Showcase is “Great Films in Small Packages.” Professor Karl Bardosh Selected Films for the Jury of the International Cell Phone Cinema and Short Films Showcase at the Marche du film in Cannes:
