SEULE A MON MARIAGE (ALONE AT MY WEDDING) IN THE ACID SELECTION AT CANNES

SEULE A MON MARIAGE (ALONE AT MY WEDDING), a Belgian film by Marta Bergman will be part of the ACID filmmakers’ programme (Association pour le Cinéma Indépendant et sa Diffusion) at the Cannes International Film Festival. Produced by Frakas Productions, the film's main actors are the young Romanian Alina Serban and the Belgian Tom Vermeir who had a lead role in Felix van Groeningen's “Belgica”.

SEULE A MON MARIAGE (ALONE AT MY WEDDING) is the first feature-length fiction film by Marta Bergman, graduate of INSAS, the Belgian film school. The Bucharest-born director is known for her documentary films, in which she has explored Romania and more specifically the Roma communities. Her documentaries have been shown at prestigious festivals such as Visions du réel and the Leipzig Film Festival.

SEULE A MON MARIAGE (ALONE AT MY WEDDING) is the story of Pamela, a young Roma who is insolent, spontaneous, funny and different from the other women in her community. She is a single mother living with her grandmother and her little girl in a small hut where the three of them share a bed. How can she reconcile the needs of her two-year old daughter and her dream of freedom? Pamela embarks on a journey into the unknown, breaking away from the traditions that suffocate her. “Lapin, pizza, amour”. All she has are three words in French and the hope that marriage will change her and her daughter’s destiny.

Alina Serban, born into a Roma family in Romania, plays the role of Pamela. She is an actress and director, and studied drama in Bucharest, then at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) in London and the Tisch School of the Arts in New York. Alina Serban is very committed to the cause of the Roma community and made her name in the theatre with her one woman show, I Declare at My Own Risk, which she both wrote and performed, including in many European theatres. Pamela in SEULE A MON MARIAGE is her first role in a feature film.

Tom Vermeir is a well-established musician and theatre actor. He has also appeared in several series on Flemish television. Tom had a lead role in Belgica, a film by Felix van Groeningen, which premiered at Sundance in 2016.

The world premiere of SEULE A MON MARIAGE (ALONE AT MY WEDDING) will be in Cannes as part of the ACID filmmakers’ programme. For more than 25 years ACID has presented a parallel programme at the Cannes Film Festival, comprising around ten films, which it then supports until after their release. Some fifteen filmmakers, members of ACID, choose the programme, which includes French and foreign features, fiction and documentaries, selected from several hundred submissions from all over the world. Each year, ACID filmmakers accompany some 40 feature films to over 400 independent cinemas and festivals, cultural venues and universities in 20 countries.

The following films have been shown in the ACID Cannes programme: Kaouther Ben Hania (Challat of Tunis), Olivier Babinet (Swagger), Serge Bozon (L’Amitié), Alain Gomis (L’Afrance), Ursula Meier (Strong Shoulders), Yolande Moreau and Gilles Porte (When the Sea Rises), and Justine Triet (Age of Panic).

SEULE A MON MARIAGE (ALONE AT MY WEDDING) is a Belgian production by Frakas Productions. The film was produced in association with Hi Film (Ada Solomon) in Romania, in co-production with Avenue B Productions and Zélila Films (Caroline Bonmarchand and Sophie Leclercq) and with the support of Rouge International (Julie Gayet and Nadia Turincev) in France. The film has received support from the Film and Audiovisual Centre of the Wallonia Federation Brussels, RTBF (Belgian Television), Proximus, Wallimage (Wallonia), Screen.Brussels (Brussels Capital Region), Casa Kafka Pictures, the Province of Liège and CNC rewriting assistance. The sales will be handled by Cercamon World Sales.

Frakas Productions was founded in 2007, since when it has produced and co-produced some twenty feature films as well as short films and documentaries. Jean-Yves Roubin (CEO and Founder) and Cassandre Warnauts (Producer) develop and (co)produce together a great number of first feature films. Their current projects include Inexorable, Fabrice du Welz's new feature and first features by Banu Akseki and Christophe Hermans.
