Based on 570 historic production stills from the 1930s and 1940s Hollywood, most never seen by a modern TV audience, and in his own words, from archived interviews unheard for generations, this film is a masterpiece in its own right.

-- Viewers will learn that Capra was nearly ruined by his early success in winning Oscars. That he views "love and compassion" as the key elements in a successful film.

-- That Jimmy Stewart was unemployed and flying kites with Henry Fonda when Capra approached him to play George Bailey.

-- And that the Washington DC establishment tried to shut down distribution of Mr. Smith -- as a threat to their power -- as FDR's Ambassador to London Joseph P. Kennedy led the hostilities.

With unprecedented access to the inner workings of the KKK in the 1970’s, the film presents frank and startling insight into the Klan’s involvement in the murders of two black and white freedom fighters in Alabama.  A filmed debate between David Duke and Rev. Jesse Jackson in
Chicago highlights Duke’s strange approach to twisting American history to justify his belief in the divisive concept of “separate but equal.”  There are many parallels between “The New Klan” and the growing license to express intolerance in the current political climate. Weather and Chaos: The Work Of Edward N. Lorenz

USA / Josh Kastorf / 12 min. WORLD PREMIERE Sat., March 30, 11:30 am, Palm Springs Cultural Center (Camelot) PROGRAM 6

Why is it that we can predict a solar eclipse centuries in advance, but we can only predict the weather about a week or two in advance? Can a small-scale movement, like the flap of a butterfly’s wing, influence large-scale systems like hurricanes? In the 1960s, an MIT meteorologist exploring these questions with the help of early digital computers made a discovery that would change the way we understand not only weather but nearly everything in our universe. His work suggested there are certain systems we may never be able to predict, not because they are too complex, but because “chaos” is built into their underlying math. Years later, this idea would enter popular culture as “the butterfly effect.” This is the first film about Edward N. Lorenz and his role in Chaos Theory produced with the participation of scientists who worked alongside him. With their help we take a closer look at what the “butterfly effect” actually meant in the context of Lorenz’s work, and why it should make all of us rethink our understanding of our universe.

We are losing our connection with the night sky, which provided us with wonders like Stonehenge, the Pyramids of Giza and the Mayan calendar. It also keeps our overworked, politicized lives simple, and makes us kind, thoughtful. Astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson said: “When you look at the night sky, you realize how small we are within the cosmos,” “It’s kind of resetting of your ego. To deny yourself that state of mind, either willingly or unwittingly, is to not live to the full extent of what it is to be human.”

In 2014, Bakari Sellers–one of the youngest sitting members of the South Carolina House–campaigns to be the first African American elected to statewide office since the 1870s. He runs for Lieutenant Governor, the second highest office in the state. The son of Cleveland Sellers, a prominent 1960s Civil Rights activist who was a leading member of SNCC, Bakari understands the difficult race relations in the American South. “Our race is not about what South Carolina was, it’s not about what South Carolina is, but it’s about what South Carolina can be,” he says. But as a Democrat in a red state, Bakari has a tough race ahead. News media consistently place Bakari behind his Republican opponent, Henry McMaster. Bakari doesn't help his electability among white voters when he makes removing the Confederate Flag part of his campaign platform. But he refuses to give up. “I can’t win if I don’t run,” he states.

Yellow Hair

USA/ Lee Lynch / 25 min. CALIFORNIA PREMIERE Tues. April 2, 1:30 pm, Camelot PROGRAM 48

Throughout Kevin Gilger's years living with his wife in a storage facility apartment as an on-site manager, customers remarked on his resemblance to Duane Lee Chapman star of Reality TV's Dog the Bounty Hunter (the once popular show followed Chapman's real-life exploits as a bounty collector, but became a focus of controversy after a tape surfaced of Chapman voicing stridently racist views). In response to this happenstance, Gilger -- a part-time artist, 'lightworker', and self-described reincarnated Native American -- undertook a transformation, appropriating Chapman's image in hopes to trick the public into thinking he’s actually the reality star. However, unlike Chapman, who uses fame to market a cynical worldview, Gilger sees it as a platform for his own spiritual voice.
