Gary Lucas plays his original solo guitar score live accompanying Spanish "Dracula" (1931, d. George Melford)

Director: George Melford.
The legendary Spanish "Dracula" was filmed at night on the same sets in 1931 in Hollywood and at the same time as the famous Todd Browning/ Bela Lugosi version--but in Spanish, with a Spanish speaking cast and a British director! Film historians consider this version far superior, more "full-blooded"--the editing is more fluid (the original Dracula is quite static, basically a photographed stage play), the lighting more inventive, the camerawork and compositions much bolder, the acting is juicier, and the women are hotter :-) Like "Dracula", it contains no music--Gary Lucas provides a continuous solo guitar underscore that has won praise at film and music festivals all over the world: Review of the World Premiere of Gary Lucas' Spanish "Dracula" project at the Havana Film Festival 12/11/09: "The US guitarist Gary Lucas defied the gods and brought back to life one of the darkest and most terrifying creatures in the literature of horror... Dracula did not need to rise from his coffin in order to return from the realm of the dead; he did it through the guitar of this legendary musician, who, like the most celebrated vampire from Transylvania, has been 'condemned' to immortality." --GRANMA (Cuba), 12/12/09 Review of the European premiere of Gary Lucas' Spanish "Dracula" project at the Transylvania International Film Festival 5/30/10: "One of the most impressive events in this year's edition of the Transylvania International Film Festival... Gary Lucas was formidable--the audience was speechless as for almost 2 hours Lucas' fingers never disconnected from his guitar... an event that no one will ever forget." ADEVARUL, Romania 6/1/10 Review of the New York premiere of Gary Lucas' Spanish "Dracula" at the 48th New York Film Festival 10/9/10: "The event Saturday evening event was terrific, an intoxicating mix of music and imagery. Gary's score builds a nice, eerie immersion an atmosphere of perdition and romantic longing." --SOME CAME RUNNING (film critic Glenn Kenny's column) full review here: http://bit.ly/ckizt5 "Gary Lucas' brilliant musical dialogue with George Melford's Spanish-language "Dracula" rescues this film from mere camp, highlighting the films many innovative and indeed modernist flourishes." --Richard Pena, director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center Full house and standing ovation for the Spanish premiere of Gary Lucas' Spanish "Dracula" at the 7th Sevilla Film Festival 11/8/10: Check out an interview with Gary Lucas from Spanish National TV RTVE beginning at 3:34 here: http://bit.ly/b5i8bO 4 Star review in The Guardian for the UK premiere of Gary Lucas' Spanish "Dracula" at the London Jazz Festival at Queen Elizabeth Hall: http://bit.ly/jLaP1K

ÉCU SPOTLIGHT: CHARLIE KAUFMAN AND “CROWDFUNDING” ÉCU is a strong supporter of the unbridled creativity which is afforded to indie filmmakers, but acknowledges the difficulties in financing costs. This week the spotlight is on the acclaimed American screenwriter, director and producer Charlie Kaufman, who defies conventions and creates inspiringly innovative work. In September he raised twice the $200,000 budget required to produce his upcoming animat...

The Fresh Demonstrations of My Movies of Brodsky and Akhmatova

user
As the feedback is so perceptible for me as the director-essayist of shortcuts dedicated to poetry and poets, I ponder that I have to add fresh annotations or at least commentaries sufficient to characterize further directions of my work as of a cinematographer. My "Carmine Frescoes of Joseph Brodsky: the Venetian Sheen" gathered a harvest of attention, and I have a bit to tell you of, concerning fresh demonstrations and the definite recognition of the genre that I invented for my up ...

Book

Director: Elton Baxhaku.
This is a film about the book. The art and the craft of making the object which has always been and is part of our life. Starting as a sheet of paper, it gets all the violence of the machinery, like press power, foldings, cuttings and bindings, in order to be finalized as unity which encloses words. This unity is called “book”. But, what really makes the book a book? The “voice” of Stéphane Mallarmé narrates some of the answers of this question.

user
Novelist Anne Rice'S 2005 book Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt  (Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Random House, Inc)which imagines Jesus at the ages of 7-8 is being made into a film slated for release sometime in 2013.  Rice originally had a movie deal with Good News Holdings, but that fell apart in 2009, and the project was shelved indefinitely. But after watching The Stoning of Soraya M, Rice felt like she'd found the right person to bring her story to the silver screen: Am...

Juan Torres: “I am someone that can`t stop moving.”

user
If I ask your friends to describe you, what would they say? They would say that I am someone that can`t stop moving. Combined with my cinema profession in Madrid I play also on a latin music band in Paris. The result: last week in Guadalajara, now in Sofia (laughing), and next week going to Paris for a concert there. So my friends also usually say that they can never see me. What qualities do you feel a successful artist should have? I think, and I hope there is not a...

Eran Kolirin: “My filmis permeated by a sense of insecurity”

user
Let’s start with your character, Oded, who at one point began to question his everyday life... One of the things I love the most about cinema is that sometimes the most mundane things, if you stare at them long enough, start to look unusual. If we look deep enough at a regular chair, for example, at some point it startsto seem like something completely unknown... If we start gazing at things, in a moment we begin to ask questions: “What is a car?” – “A big box with four...

Victor Ginzburg: “I want to change the world and therefore I make films”

user
Undoubtedly the most discussed film in the Russian independent cinema over the past year, Generation P, is one of those Clockwork Oranges, which have influence both on intelligent and critical audience, and on the mass audience. Of course, many purists and utter pedants concerning the Pelevin’s novels denied it immediately. The same happens, probably, with all more daring films, based on the works of cult authors. Anyway, the most important thing is that Ginzburg has made a success...
