Pandemos - New Submission to ÉCU 2013

Pandemos is a new submission to ÉCU 2013 in the category European Experimental Film. A girl thinks she's like Aphrodite and that with her beauty she can cure the damned.

Jocasta

Director: Elise Kermani.
In Sophocles' play "Oedipus Rex" Jocasta hangs herself shortly after finding out that Oedipus is both her husband and son. In Euripides' play "The Phoenician Women", Jocasta stays alive a little bit longer to try and reconcile her sons but stabs herself shortly after they kill each other during the war at Thebes. But in Kermani's film "Jocasta", Jocasta stays alive after her sons' mutual murders to perform a sacrifice to save Thebes, and to satiate Ares' ancient fury of Kadmos' slaying of the dragon. Jocasta chooses the creative act of writing over suicide. Her ritual act remembers that Body is Presence (Plato's 'ousia' and Heidegger's 'Ereignis') and Jocasta reminds us that she (also known as Iocasta) is related to Io, the Great Cow goddess of Egypt. The origins of writing are sacred manifestations of ousia/hestia...esti/Being. She reverses the taboo of incest, and reestablishes the symbollic image of mother and son. Jocasta's sacrifice was inspired by an ancient Persian ritual of ingesting the Word to cure illness. www.elisekermani.com/jocasta.html www.elisekermani.com/thejocastaproject.html

DARK LEGEND

user
Director: ZACHOS SAMOLADAS.
DARK LEGEND is the fourth film of director ZAHOS SAMOLADAS. The film goes back to the roots of vampirism, Lamia and the ancient fables of Greece. It is the story of two brothers with leathal forces, two vampires Manoyil and Drakon, both children of Lamia. Their different origin, separates them in the path that leads to the dark side of their existence. The snob and vicious Drakon, wants simply to dominate on all mortal and immortal and Manoyil the son of a mortal, who wants to collaborate with humans. Between them two women, Thalia and Niki accept the call of the night creatures. But the moral code of Manoyil brings him confronted with his dark substance. In the path of history and Time Manuel will fall in love with Niki a girl that saves from the death from the hands of Germans in 1943, and the pain. Two vampires that become the terror of their opponents and will keep up to the end their scary secret.

The Lost Poem

Director: Apollo Poetry.
What if our words could echo through time? What if the things we do to-day could inspire complete strangers without us ever knowing it? This film follows the ripple effect of our decisions and is meant to teach us to be grateful for all the things we have in our lives. Follow the journey of a homeless man as he struggles to get his life together, while a college student’s life gradually goes downhill. The 2 men are connected in a way they never knew. They are connected not only through time, but also through words.

Penelopa

Director: Ben Ferris.
“There are Two Gates of Disembodied Dreams: The Gate of Horn and the Gate of Ivory. Those dreams that reach us through carved ivory bring words that damage us…But dreams that take the Gate of Polished Horn…do foretell what is in truth to come.” [Penelope, Book 19 ‘The Odyssey’ of Homer] Penelope, the mythical character from Homer’s The Odyssey, is waiting for her husband Odysseus to return from war. In this film adaptation, set in a mythic time and space, with contemporary influences and attitudes, Penelope is both archetype and human being. She wanders alone through the halls of her castle, each room a different memory. In these rooms she has visions of her husband, as past, present and future become indistinguishable from each other. Her visions are an escape from the loneliness of the present and increasingly dislocate her from the world around her: the companionship of her maidservants and the feasting mythical suitors who have gathered in her halls.
