Potiche,
a film which entertains everyone
By
Ron Gilbert
Catherine Deneuve is the French equivalent of our
Elizabeth Taylor. She is an ageless beauty whom I first saw back in my college
days in “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”.
Then of course the film,” Belle du Jour” a few years later. She still seduces
us with a screen presence which has your eyes glued to the screen in her new
film. A star who doesn’t complain about not getting the roles like American actres...

Film director Michel Gondry is to head up the short film and Cinéfondation jury of the 64th Festival de Cannes, following in the footsteps of Atom Egoyan, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Martin Scorsese and John Boorman.
With his seven feature films, several shorts and seventy-odd music videos, Michel Gondry, who is also a musician, has created an incredibly original body of work coloured with dreamscape qualities and Utopian ideals. A master craftsman, a modern day Méliès, he is a ci...

54th San Francisco International Film Festival (April 21–May 5) announces an annual programming highlight and audience favorite, the presentation of a film accompanied by live performance of an original score by a contemporary music artist. This year Tindersticks, the groundbreaking British chamber rock band known for its distinctive orchestral sound and the baritone of lead vocalist Stuart Staples, will perform works from the scores that they have created for six films of French director Clai...
THE SLEEPING BEAUTY (Catherine Breillat)
Kathryn Bigelow may have broken through the glass ceiling with her historic Best Director Oscar win last year for THE HURT LOCKER, but the door was not pushed wide open for women directors in the American film industry. Despite strong work by such American indie stalwarts as Lisa Cholodenko (THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT) and Nicole Holofcener (PLEASE GIVE), and the emergence of a number of debut directors (chief among them Debra Granik with WIN...

by Marla LewinJust a little more than a month away from my favorite French Film Festival in Los Angeles, The City of Lights-City of Angels film festival. Each year it gets better and better with great films and small intimate interviews with amazing legendary directors and this year will be no different as they will be honoring the acclaimed writer-director Bertrand Blier. Who could forget his film GOING PLACES starring Gérard Depardieu, Miou-Miou, and Jeanne Moreau? This year they w...
It is a longstanding amour fou......the crazy love New Yorkers have for all things French, and the French appreciation of New York as its cultural cousin. For both sides, the yearly Rendez-Vous With French Cinema program, which is now running in several venues around New York City, is both an erotic embrace and a dazzling dance. For francophiles and film buffs, it is a film feast.
Presented by the Film Society at Lincoln Center and Unifrance, the 16th edition offers its customary ho...
BOUDU SAUVÉ DES EAUX

I tried...but portugese is too tough, no subtitles to help.
RED NIGHTS

THE RITE

The Panorama section of the Berlinale, known for its edgy programming, is celebrating two significant anniversaries this year. The first is the 30 year involvement of Wieland Speck, the handsome honcho who began his involvement as an assistant to the legendary Manfred Salzgaber, a producer and film exhibitor who began the section as an alternative to the somewhat stuffy programming of the main Berlinale section. With an emphasis on queer and outsider cinema, the Panorama was event...
