The National Puerto Rican Day Parade announces more details on this year’s 64th Annual celebration, including a collaboration with the Tribeca Festival to celebrate Puerto Rican culture at special screenings taking place at Soundview Park in the Bronx and Rockaway Beach 30th St Playground in Queens, on Sunday, June 13th, the same day as the Parade’s TV celebration. By highlighting their programming of Puerto Rican films, Tribeca aims to celebrate Puerto Rican stories, art & culture in a way that reflects the Puerto Rican community’s long-standing influence and the indelible imprint left on New York City.
“We are thrilled about this collaboration with Tribeca because these are two iconic New York celebrations highlighting Puerto Rican films and stories on a global stage, the Tribeca Film Festival,” said Louis Maldonado, NPRDP Board Chair. “The Parade is a platform for amplifying our history, culture and contributions into the broader narrative, and screening these amazing films at Tribeca is a perfect way to do just that.”
The films will be screened at Soundview and Rockaway Beach as part of Tribeca’s Borough-to-Borough program and will explore themes of community resilience, social activism, and embracing an artistic-driven sense of purpose and creative fulfillment - no matter what stage in life. Two of these films, Cucarachita Martina’s Musical Adventure and Takeover, will be featured as part of the Parade’s two-hour TV special, airing on WABC-TV Channel 7 in New York City and on Telecinco in Puerto Rico, on June 13 at noon EDT.

Cucarachita Martina’s Musical Adventure; directed, animated and edited by Waldo Cabrera, and written by Raquel Ortiz, Cucarachita Martina’s Musical Adventure is an animated short film that was inspired by Pura Belpré’s first picture book, published in 1932, “Pérez and Martina: A Portorican Tale.” One day while Martina is sweeping her patio, she finds a gold coin and buys a songbook, a cancionero. As she sits on her balcony getting ready for the annual singing competition at the fiestas patronales, Martina receives a number of visitors; six in total! Each one wants to sing a duet with Martina in the talent show. Who will she pick? Produced by the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College.

Ciudad de Nueva York (2 de junio de 2021) El Desfile Nacional Puertorriqueño (NPRDP, por sus siglas en inglés) ofreció más detalles sobre la 64ta celebración anual a llevarse a cabo este año, incluyendo una colaboración con el Festival de Cine de Tribeca, entidad que se une a la celebración de la cultura puertorriqueña con proyecciones especiales que se llevarán a cabo en el Soundview Park en el Bronx y Rockaway Beach 30th St Playground en Queens, el domingo 13 de junio, el mismo día de la celebración televisiva del desfile.

Al destacar su programación de películas puertorriqueñas, Tribeca tiene como objetivo celebrar las historias, el arte y la cultura puertorriqueña de una manera que refleje las grandes contribuciones de la comunidad puertorriqueña y la huella indeleble que ha dejado en la ciudad de Nueva York.
