Acclaimed actors, innovative filmmakers, independent film trailblazers and headline making journalists will be among those featured during the upcoming “Industry In Focus” Series and “In Conversation” programming at The American Pavilion at the 2019 Cannes International Film Festival, it was announced by Julie Sisk, Founder and Director of The American Pavilion (www.ampav.com).
The American Pavilion’s discussions and one-on-one in conversations take place in the Roger Ebert Conference Center and are open to all AmPav members.
We kick off the festival with fascinating In Conversation events with award-winning filmmakers John Carpenter and Luca Guadagnino.
Programming includes executives and moderators from IMDb, Amazon Studios, Indiewire, The Wrap, XYZ Films, Disney, WME, Roadside Attractions LLC, Film Independent, Ribbow Media, The Wild Immersion VR, Simulated Reality, LLC, Zambezi Partners, Springboard VR, Cairo International Film Festival, Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, Film Society at Lincoln Center, UCLA’s Global Media Center for Social Impact, Freestyle Releasing, Vanishing Angle, Arclight Films, Submarine, Cinelytic, StoryFit, Sawyer Studios, Screen Anarchy, among other notable speakers.
Diverse topics being covered in the Series include: Distribution Throw-Down – Netflix Vs. Theaters, Producing for VR, Building a Global Village Frame By Frame, American Directors at Cannes, Breaking Through Together: Connecting Emergent Voices, Creating Alliances, Transforming Structures, Industry in Focus series – It’s Called Show Business, The Golden Age of Documentaries, The Music of the Cannes Film Festival, State of Play – Artificial intelligence, Big Data and the Film Industry, and The Art of the Pitch.
Queer Night, which has become the best, biggest and only gay dance party event tied to the Festival, will take place on Tuesday, May 21 beginning at 9:00PM and entry is gratis to ALL Festival badge holders.
AmPav’s Emerging Filmmaker Showcase will celebrate its 22nd year at Cannes this year, with an impressive program featuring 29 short documentary and narrative films by up-and-coming filmmakers from the U.S. and around the world, all of which will screen at The American Pavilion during the festival. This years films show AmnPav’s commitment to inclusion with 17 female directors or co-directors and 11 LGBTQ themed films in the program. Additionally this year in partnership with the Colin Higgins Foundation, The American Pavilion recently announced scholarships for LGBTQ students will celebrate its inaugural year honoring two gifted and hardworking trailblazers – both filmmakers and activists: Alex McFry and Julie Tjalas.
The American Pavilion’s Worldwide Student Program continues its streak of student satisfaction year over year, with an increasing number of students returning to do the student program this year as Alumni. This year’s student program also shows a welcome uptick of women participants, with female students outnumbering the male students nearly 2 to 1.
Past Student Program alumni include director Jeff Nicholls, acquisitions executive Scott Shooman, CAA agent Dakhil Maha, Killer Films production executive David Hinojosa, MGM Television’s VP of Business and Legal Affairs Kathryn Floro, Syfy development director Eli Kirschner, Barack Obama’s White House videographer Hope Hall, and producers Cameron Porsandeh, Alex Shepsman, and Bryan Wynbrandt, among many others.
