Director Zhang Yimou’s reimagining of the classic Three Kingdoms: Jingzhou epic tells the story of a powerful King and his people who have been displaced from their homeland and long to win it back. The King is wild and ambitious, but his motives and methods are mysterious. His great commander is a visionary who longs for nothing more than to win the ultimate battle, but needs to lay his plans in secret. The women of the palace are tragic figures, caught between being revered as goddesses and treated as mere pawns. And then there is the shadow, a commoner, the “everyman” around whom the inexorable forces of power, fate and history swirl, always ready to swallow him up.
Shadow was recently honored with four awards at this year’s Golden Horse Awards, including Best Director for Zhang Yimou.
Ellen Eliasoph, CEO of Shadow’s co-presenting company Perfect Village and the film’s lead producer, states “We feel greatly honoured by the International Film Festival & Awards Macao’s selection of Shadow as this year’s Closing Film. Shadow’s Closing Film screening on December 14 will mark its first presentation to audiences in Macao and Hong Kong, where it will release in early 2019. We hope the audience will enjoy the unique “Chinese inkbrush painting” style Director Zhang Yimou, working with his wonderful cast and crew, created for the telling of a story full of mystery and ambiguity -- a story in which nothing is purely black or white.”
Mike Goodridge, Artistic Director of the IFFAM comments “Shadow is a visually extraordinary film which will have audiences agape at the spectacle on show. It is also a riveting story of intrigue and deception set in the court of an ancient kingdom. We are reminded with Shadow just what an unrivalled cinematic storyteller Zhang Yimou is, and feel it is the perfect film with which to close our festival. We thank director Zhang, Ellen and the whole Shadow team for granting us the privilege of premiering this film in the Macao/Hong Kong territory."
