APSA ANNOUNCES NEW AWARD CATEGORY & INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE |
Today, we announced that a new music award category will debut at this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The announcement was made at an APSA Academy event at Cannes Film Festival, which was attended by international industry guests and APSA Academy members with titles currently in Cannes Competition and Un Certain Regard. For the first time, five music practitioners from across the Asia Pacific will be nominated for the new APSA award. A new specialist International Jury will determine the winner. The inaugural winner will be presented with their APSA at the 12th annual awards ceremony in Brisbane, Australia on 29 November, 2018. Music is an incredibly powerful medium and one that lies at the heart of cultural expression. This is a hugely exciting development for us and we look forward to expanding the awards to honour the artistry of music in film. This follows the announcement of APSA’s exciting new alliance with our Latin American counterpart, the Premios Platino del Cine Iberoamericano Awards (Platino Awards). Encompassing 93 countries and areas across five continents, our alliance will better connect Ibero-America and the Asia Pacific through cinema. The alliance will amplify co-production opportunities, promote cross-cultural dialogue and provide a stronger platform to support the outstanding and diverse cinematic works from both regions. Anchoring the alliance is a reciprocal agreement to represent the regions on each award ceremony’s jury. An Asia Pacific jury member will sit on the sixth edition of The Platino Awards in 2019, and a filmmaker from Ibero-America will be appointed to the APSA International Jury in 2018. Finally, we congratulate the EFA Young Audience Award winner Wallay. Australia took part in the award for the first time. The event saw 30 Brisbane teenagers watching, discussing and voting on three new European films as part of a global youth jury.
