Film media has been a discourse of reality. If three years ago for refugee crises, two years ago Donald Trump, this year it has been the harassment and abuse in the film industry.
In the midst of the #MeToo movement, this year’s Tribeca Film Festival focuses on women’s issues. 44 films at the 17th Annual Tribeca Film Festival are directed by women -46% of the 96 titles– a record-breaking percentage in the Festival’s history. This has been championed by two executives from the Festival -- Jane Rosenthal, Co-Founder & CEO and Paula Weinstein, EVP of Tribeca Enterprises.
Opening Night was directed by a woman, Lisa D’Apolito, with the World Premiere of Love, Gilda. The film is about the SNL trailblazer Gilda Radner staring Chevy Chase, Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Cecily Strong.
Closing Night will be with World Premiere of The Fourth Estate from Oscar®-nominated director Liz Garbus, following The New York Times’ coverage of the Trump administration’s first year. Find out more about the Closing Night here
Other highlights include: Blue Night starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Disobedience starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, Egg starring Alysia Reiner and Christina Hendricks, The Miseducation of Cameron Post starring Chloë Grace Moretz, a documentary about the Barbie brand titled Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie, Daughter of Mine by director Laura Bispuri with in the center a trio of women: Valeria Golino, Alba Rohrwacher and the young Sara Casu, and many more.
Tribeca Talks will also feature Claire Danes, Nancy Meyers, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
"As a testament to everyone who is in this room, we know that women’s voices are being heard louder," said co-founder & CEO Rosenthal. "We are all about the stories that women tell. [Paula Weinstein] has taught all of us at Tribeca that NO is not an option and that we will keep pushing to make things fair."
TIME'S UP will host its inaugural New York event during the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, April 28.
