"Scrappy" has won 3rd place in the international fiction film contest at the Athens International Digital Film Fest in Athens, Greece on April 4, 2018. Produced by Ron de Cana Productions, Inc. and helmed by Dawn Westlake, the film is based on the Studs Terkel Humanities Award-winning poem by her father, Donald G. Westlake. It recounts a real-life anecdote from Donald's childhood in rural Elburn, Illinois, USA when he had to stand up to the American gun culture.
Canon USA, Inc. supplied Westlake's team with a C300 for the shoot on location in Pine Mountain and Los Angeles, California. "Scrappy" was shot and edited by Pol Carrizo Vilarroig of Imatge Barcelona. An original score was composed by 2016 Peer Raben Music Award nominee GC Johnson of Acoustic Labs.
The film marks the professional acting debut of 5-year-old Nefertina Lizarraga and her dog Kong, in the titular role of "Scrappy".
This is the second award for "Scrappy". The film won the People's Choice Award in November 2017 at the RATMA Film Festival in Keighley, UK.
