The winners were announced for the best films at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival.
Critic favorite Ang Lee´s "Brokeback Mountain" won the Leone d´Or, a film about two cowboys who fall in love in the 1960's.
George Clooney´s "Good Night and Good Luck", a favorite at the festival since its debut early in the week won two awards: David Strathairn who plays TV journalist Ed Murrow was awarded best actor (Coppa Volpi) and George Clooney won for best script along with Grant Heslov. The National Syndication of Italian journalists voted "Good Night and Good Luck" best film.
Giovanna Mezzogiorno won the best actress award for Cristina Comencini's "Don't Tell", voted best Italian film by an Italian youth jury yesterday (Arca Cinema Giovani). A special jury acting award went to Isabelle Hubert who plays a wife who leaves and returns to her husband the same day in Patrice Chereau´s "Gabrielle".
In the Horizons section the awards went to 'Pervye na lune' by Aleksey Fedortchenko, for best documentary and best feature: 'East of Paradise' by Lech Kowalski.
The Leone D’Argento , Silver Lion, went to Philippe Garrel for "Les Amants Reguliers", a story about young revolutionaries in France during 1968. William Lubtchansky was also awarded with a special technical prize for the film for photography.
Abel Ferrara's "Mary" , a religious thriller that takes up the role of Mary Magdelene as one of the disciples of Jesus won a special Jury prize. The award came about since the jury was divided on the Gold and Silver Lion awards.
The Lion Future "Leone del Futuro" for a first feature went to "13" (Tzameti) by Gela Babluani.
Several short film awards went to 'Butterflies' by Max Joacoby (Best European short), the Short Super short award to'Xiaozhan' by Lin Chien-ping -- The Citroen Lion (Leone Citroen) - and special mention to 'Layla Afel' by Leon Prudovsky.
The Marcello Mastroianni, dedicated to a young emerging actor or actress went to Menothy Cesar, in "Vers le Sud"(Heading South) by Laurent Cantet , a film about sexual tourism in Haiti during the 80’s.
"Mater Natura" by Massimo Andrei was voted the best film by the audience for International Critic´s Week, a film about a support network of transvestites and transgenders.
The Leoncino D´Oro or “Little Lion award”, announced yesterday by the Arca Cinema Giovanni youth jury went to Park Chan wook´s "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance".
From the Venice Day section, Xavier Beauvois won the best film for "Le Petit Lieutenant" , a crime thriller set in a Parisian police department starring Nathalie Baye as police captain.
Hiyao Miyasaki was presented with a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement yesterday in a special ceremony at Sala Grande on September 9th, and actress Stephanie Sandrelli was presented with a Golden Lion for her acting career at the closing ceremonies.
