Why did you choose to adapt your own novel to the screen, rather than someone else’s?
My
novel is tied to my own life. As a debutant I thought that it would be
better to work with something that I know well because it was obvious
that I was going to have every possible obstacle come in my way. It was
important to have my own story, one which I am comfortable and familiar
with. And 20 years later I can spend the taxpayer’s money on a grand
screen adaptation of another classic.
What made you pick Milenita for the lead role – why is she Lora?
From
today’s perspective, selecting Milenita in the role of Lora seems as
the most logical choice. A year ago I wasn’t so sure because I didn’t
know if a non-professional actor could handle the lead role in the film.
But I said to myself that it’s my first film as a director, so why not
give her a first chance at acting. On top of that, as a bonus to having
her play the role beautifully, I had the opportunity to use her music
for the soundtrack. The gamble with Milenita was well worth it.
