New York, Aug. 10 – “Zaritsas: Russian Women in New York,” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1612144/) a documentary that explores the negative stereotypes of Russian women in America which emerged in the 1990s and persist today, will be shown as part of the first annual Astoria/LIC International Film Festival in Astoria/LIC, New York on October 24th at 2 p.m.
“Zaritsas: Russian Women in New York” was written and directed by Elena Beloff and produced by Elena Beloff, Vincent D'Onofrio and Erika Hampson. The film explores and dispels certain stereotypes about the young, immigrant Russian woman in America today by following five women in transition, each on their own journey. The film is timely because of recent media coverage of the Russian-American experience.
Russian-born Elena Beloff, who has lived in New York for ten years, followed the women for six months, interviewing each one in her environment: A rapper in a Sheepshead Bay Church; a salesperson at La Perla Madison Avenue Boutique; a model at home; a showgirl at a Brighton Beach Restaurant and an exotic dancer at Scores Strip Club. The viewer sees the stereotypes dissolve and the flesh and blood woman comes to life. The viewer is confronted by these women as their experiences pose questions of spirituality and self-discovery as they come to vivid life on the New York scene. Elena Beloff is a graduate from the New School University. Elena is currently developing new films. Elena is also a hypnotist and is on staff at the Advanced Hypnosis Center. She resides in New York City. “Zaritsas: Russian Women in New York” is her first film.
The Astoria/LIC Film Festival promotes an open and nurturing environment for artists, writers, actors, filmmakers and fans, and will focus on offering great networking opportunities for its participants. This first annual film festival gives start to a great new tradition of promoting new and emerging voices in film, spoken word and art similar to the Tribeca and NYC Downtown Film Festivals.
The Astoria/LIC has been dubbed The United Nations of New York City: according to newspapers, with people from 120 different countries living and working in these diverse and eccentric New York neighborhood. Astoria/LIC makes a terrific host for this new tradition, on par with such established art locales as the Village, SoHo or Williamsburg. -0- 8/10/2001
