Karlovy Vary 2012, echoes and encores, with a Certain Geriatric Regard!

user
Besides the customary unveiling of new and upcoming talent from far and wide which is the hallmark of this festival,  Karlovy 2012 provided such an extensive look at film history that these selections alone could have constituted an entire festival on their own.  Among digitally restored new prints of landmark old films were Fellini's "La Strada, 1954, which among other things made burly actor Anthony Quinn into an arthouse icon, and Miloš Forman's "Fireman's Ball" (1967) the...

A whole new world at DIFF

user
Film allows you to see the world without leaving your seat. My third day at DIFF took me from Lisbon to a farm in Africa, the Deep South, the Philippines and Paris. Dark clouds rolled into Durban yesterday, but the sun always shines at the movies (thank you A-Ha). My first film was the wonderful black and white Portuguese film, Tabu. The competition film is filled with nostalgia. It is set in modern-day Lisbon and in 1930s colonial Africa. It is a wonderful love story remi...

The good, the bad and the ugly

user
Day 2 of DIFF was a day of extremes. It was wonderful to see all the film fans studying their guides - some of the guides visibly well-read. I watched three films today and they are very diverse. Chicken with plums (Poulet aux prunes) premiered at Venice. It is a beautiful love story of a musician, played by Mathieu Amalric of The Diving Belle and the butterfly fame, who can't get over the loss of his violin and he decides to rather die. It sounds like a depressing film but it is in...

Amour and Beyond the Hills top critics fave list at Cannes, by Moira Sullivan

user
From the clear blue waves from the Mediterranean washing up on the shore, to a new film by Jackie Chan, and nearly non-stop fireworks every few days, the city of Cannes is nothing less than spectacular in ushering in 12 days of cinema magic at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. This is an inferno of media, fans, celebrities and press. Churches stay open at night, street singers set up stages, and red carpets are out everywhere. Hundreds of people ascend "les steppes"...
