Irregular Seasoning

Director: Adrien Beau.
Irregular Seasoning is loosely inspired by the life of the French Marchioness de Brinvilliers (1630-1676). The Marchioness is a depressed woman of the French aristocracy who leads a dull life in her castle, dominated by her husband, an "important" man, her small daughter and the servants. Attempting to end her days with rat poison, she resolves to test it on one of her maids. Rather sucessfully. She discovers a passion for poisoning, and she considers it an art. One by one, she kills her husband, her daughter and the greater part of the well-bred people that come around for a visit. She finds her life’s purpose, yet her life ends with her being burned at the stake. In her finest garments, she happily meets her end having finally done something with her life. But even the Marquise knows, all good things must come to an end.

Northern Lights: New Canadian Cinema at ERA

CANADIAN FRONT 2008 At Museum of Modern Art

Wednesday, March 19------In a bitter twist of irony, Americans know far more about the film culture of Europe and Asia than they do about their neighbor to the north. Canadian cinema, which has flourished for decades, makes an occasional dent in the United States in an unfair balance of trade that sees American films flooding the Canadian market (as they do everywhere else in the world).  Well, for the past week, the Museum of Modern Art has attempted to redress this imbalance with thei...

Oscar ceremony serves up a clean sweep and a long nap February 29, 2004Sean Penn picked the wrong year to attend the Oscars. Foreign Films – and Denys Arcand -- Invade HollywoodThough fewer and fewer foreign films flicker on America’s screens every year, foreign films – and foreigners -- enjoyed a strong showing at Sunday night’s Academy awards. Nominations went to Brazilian’s City of God, New Zealand’s Whale Rider, France’s The Triplets of Belleville and Germany’s Die Rote Jacke, to name a few. Not one of these films walked away with the gold Sunday night, but plenty of New Zealander from the Lord of ...
