Eco-Pirate: The Story of Paul Watson at ADFF 2011

user
Environmental films played a key role in this year's Abu Dhabi Film Festival. One of the eco-docs to screen at the 2011 ADFF was ECO-PIRATE: The Story of Paul Watson (2011), a film that focuses on the notorious eco-pirate, Paul Watson, who once had been named ‘persona non grata’ in Iceland after he had sunk two whaling ships in the Reykjavik harbor in 1988. The film tackles a heated political debate from the 1970’s till present day about the whaling industry, which is responsible for decim...

He had the whole crowd in stitches with his witty humor and singsong/rolling Irish accent. The film has held a successful run as yet, festival hopping for over a year now with a sweet final triumph at RIFF. While Richie is a g...

The Mournful Maturity Of Miranda July

user
For 37-year-old performance artist, writer and filmmaker Miranda July, life is a series of lessons about loss, mortality and the inescapable feeling that time is slipping away. And yet, despite these heavy themes, her depiction of a kind of blank and ironic human comedy has been the hallmark of her style. This maddeningly passivity has clearly connected with some and infuriates others. Well, both these camps will have much to react to as July’s sophomore film effort THE FUTURE starts it...

GreenHeroes Episode 4; The Tree of Life

#
Director: John Prowse, John Bessai .
GreenHeroes are remarkable people who acted on their idea and heroically “ventured forth” to protect our planet. Through their stories, our goal is to inspire people to take action and green their everyday lives. In this episode we find GreenHeroes at the root of the earth’s problems helping find new ways to tackle deforestation, GMOs, mass food production and even poverty in Africa. We feature three women on their journeys to make a difference. Featuring: Tzeporah Berman, organizer of a series of protests that drew 10,000 supporters at the height of the Clayoquot Sound conflict in British Columbia. To achieve her goals, Tzeporah straddles the line between activism and corporate America. She works with corporations such as Staples and Dell to help them become more ecologically friendly. She also convinced Victoria’s Secret to print their catalogues on recycled paper. Wangari Maathai, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, the first environmentalist to be recognized with this honour. Wangari initiated the Green Belt movement in Kenya, a program in which groups of women were paid to plant trees, proving advantageous for both the environment and the women. The movement set off the United Nations One Billion Trees Campaign. Each year, the campaign aims to have one billion trees planted worldwide. Laura Reinsborough, a real pioneer for local food usage and a new mother, she founded an organization that does away with rotting fruit. Laura founded Not Far From The Tree, an organization that harvests fruit bearing plants around Toronto. A third of the bounty goes to the volunteers, a third goes to the owner of the tree and a third goes to local shelters, preventing thousands of pounds of fruit from going to waste.
