Cinequest 17 start off with a noisy bang
Cinequest's opening night film "The Namesake" was a wonderful film my Mira Nair. Unfortunately the screening was plagued with technical problems. At four points throughout the film, the audio was overpowered by some sort of digital noise. Each lasted between a minute and 5 minutes. And each minute of it felt like an hour. After the first fix, you'd settle back into the film, only to have the same problem return three more times. Unbelievable.
Cinequest has had some fantastic films over the past few years, however, about half of the screenings I've seen have had some sort of technical problem. No audio, audio too loud, lights of but no movie, interruptions, etc, etc. You name the glitch, Cinequest has had it. Judging from the opening night's experience, we're in for more of the same.

I got a different answer about the opening night sound problems from Mike Rabehl, Associate Director of Cinequest. He said the Dolby sound heads of the California Theatre's sound system were the culprit.
Regardless, I've been to numerous screenings at that venue since opening night and the sound has been fine.

Yes, the sound problem was terrible, especially during key dialogue passages. A Cinequest staff member announced that THE NAMESAKE source print caused the noise -- unlike at the Sunday screening of PAO'S STORY, where technical difficulties stopped and started the screening numerous times. Eventually a back-up dvd was rustled up, and the final half hour or so of the film ran without any other glitches.
