Hillside Film Festival

Celebrating its fifth year in 2010, the Hillside Film Festival is calling for entries from Victoria’s most promising young filmmakers. The festival gives emerging filmmakers the opportunity to see their films on the big screen in front of a large audience, be judged professionally by some of the most respected filmmakers and writers in the country, and win some fantastic prizes along the way.

Screened in one of Victoria’s most-beautiful cinemas, the Cameo Outdoor Cinema in Belgrave, the festival proudly focuses on artistic excellence and innovation, celebrating great filmmaking across all genres, styles and budgets. We want to hear from young filmmakers with a unique voice, a story to tell and a fresh approach to filmmaking – not just those with the best equipment or famous friends. Industry judges include Sandra Sciberras, director of the AFI award-winning ‘Caterpillar Wish’ (AUS 2006), and Bridget Callow, producer of the AFI-nominated ‘Bitter and Twisted’ (AUS 2008).

This year, filmmakers are competing for a stack of cash and awards, including a $1,000 cash prize from The Upwey & District Community Bank Group and a prize pack from Madman Entertainment. Selected films will also feature on the small screen, presented on Foxtel’s Aurora Community Channel as part of Youth Week 2010. To enter, films must be 15 minutes or less, and the filmmaker from Victoria and aged 30 or under.

For more information, and to enter online, check out www.hillsidefilmfestival.com.

Entries close on Monday 2nd November.

MONO NO AWARE FILM PERFORMANCE EVENT

You are welcome to submit. MONO NO AWARE is open to any person or group of persons making work incorporating Super8 or 16mm film format as part of that presentation. For example: blending film & theater performance, musicians creating a visual experience for their sound, & experimental filmmakers working with story tellers. Entries will only be accepted on Super8 or 16mm film. FILM ONLY. No Digital Video. Part of our purpose in having this gathering is to put an emphasis on the cinematic experience. Film & video are so easily accessible, you can watch something on a website, television, a home projector, or even your cell phone. For some filmmakers those vehicles are copies of the original artwork, each one degraded by its format. We believe there is a magic in seeing the film as a print. There is a presence a poet has reading his/her own writing. There is a feeling that resonates in your chest when you see a band live. For these reasons we are encouraging live music, performance, and audio to expand the cinematic experience beyond the screen. We ask that in the spirit of the festival you not video or create copies of your performance. Some participants have gone as far as to destroy the work after its first run at the event. Embrace the film medium. Cut & splice found footage you picked up at a yard sale. Take all your unused footage from an old project and create something new with the unused scenes. Spend 50 bucks to shoot & process 100 feet of 16mm & make a 3 minute masterpiece with a friend's Bolex. Paint on the film surface. Go on eBay and pick up a dozen old reels for ten bucks. Run 10 projectors at once on a single screen. Splice, dice, paste, shoot, and do it all over again. Create visual poetry, colorful abstractions, a comedic narrative, a cinematic comet that will light up the space for several minutes and live in the minds of those there to see it in its pure state. While it's there, fill the audience's ears with a score nothing short of sonorous.

Albert Maysles

Skeleton Crew

Director: Tommi Lepola & Tero Molin.
A remote mental institution next to the Russian border was shut down by the police in the early 70´s. Dr. Andersson made series of snuff films using his patients. The Doctor filmed all the murders in 8mm and started to call himself the Auteur. 30 years later a small American film crew has arrived to Finland to shoot a horror movie about the massacre. The movie’s director, Steven, is engaged in his first feature with his DoP Darius and gaffer Mike from LA. The leading actress is a Finnish rising star Lisa, who’s dreaming about Hollywood. Dr. Andersson is played by a famous B-movie actor with a big ego. Everything is going according to plan until two Finnish sound guys discover something evil hidden in the basement: the original snuff films shot by the Auteur. Steven is stimulated by the raw and brutal snuff film material and starts to rewrite the script. The scenes are not real enough. Everything changes when he finds The Auteur’s 8mm film camera. Now he is ready to shoot his masterpiece, the film for which he will be remembered. Soon the crew realizes that they are the stars of the film. Instead of making a horror film, they are in one. The Auteur is slaying the Skeleton Crew one by one. There´s no sequel for you!
