I coplletemy agree with your marketing approach. I am now under the conclusion, looking at case-studies, that if a filmmaker took their focus off the festivals and primarily on their fan base they can use a tour style promotion and draw a much larger audience throughout the country and beyond. In essence, if a filmmaker focused on connecting with their fan base they could do something similiar to what was done with Paranormal Activity with their film: find out what parts of the country the most interest is and focus efforts in those areas.I had gone on tour, in the summmer of 2008 (bad timing). My focus was the state I shot most of it in and grew up in. This personal connection gave me alot of news/TV/radio exposure. I broke even but didn't spend much. At the end I still believe I gained more for my time/money then I would have being at a fest.
