The festival programme is complemented by various thematic retrospectives dealing with social and / or historical phenomena as terror or dictatorships, retrospective of the laureate of Marek Nowicki Prize awarded by Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, special screenings and many more. Festival is rich with accompanying events – discussions, panel debates, Q & A sessions with the filmmakers, workshops, meetings with experts, etc. Each year we invite more than 40 foreign guests – filmmakers, festival organizers, activists, etc. – who meet with the public and take part in industry events.

BOSCH: President Caught Between Empires

Director: Rene Fortunato.
The documentary presents the most important political and social events that occurred during the administration of the constitutional government with popular backing, headed by Juan Bosch, in the Dominican Republic, during the first seven months of the year 1963. The military coup d´etat that overthrew the Bosch government, the foreign policy of United States President John Kennedy, and relationship of the United States with members of the military who overthrew regimes throughout Latin America, are subjects that occupy a large part of this documentary, made entirely with original images and sounds from that era.

The movie’s director, Steven, is engaged in his first feature with his DoP Darius and gaffer Mike from LA. The leading actress is a Finnish rising star Lisa, who’s dreaming about Hollywood. Dr. Andersson is played by a famous B-movie actor with a big ego. Everything is going according to plan until two Finnish sound guys discover something evil hidden in the basement: the original snuff films shot by the Auteur. Steven is stimulated by the raw and brutal snuff film material and starts to rewrite the script. The scenes are not real enough. Everything changes when he finds The Auteur’s 8mm film camera. Now he is ready to shoot his masterpiece, the film for which he will be remembered. Soon the crew realizes that they are the stars of the film. Instead of making a horror film, they are in one. A former Drag performer, licensed hairdresser and cosmetologist Rain founded Fairplay after the tragic loss of his long time partner left him heavily in debt and with his once thriving hair salon in financial ruin. Armed with left over wigs, beauty supplies and closets full of clothes Fairplay evolved from offering basic services to crafting full fantasy worlds. The documentary film “The Godmother” offers a unique glimpse inside this world where men find relief from the demands of their everyday lives by donning extensive female accoutrements. Here the lines of gender and sexuality are blurred in absolute contrast to the surrounding status quo where gender is anything but fluid.

Border

Director: Eni Brandner.
Synopsis Granica, Grenze, Border - dividing line between two religions, two cultures - between majoritarian Serbian respectively Croatian areas. Twelve years after the end of the conflict about the 'Republic of Serbian Krajina' in the Yugoslavian/Croatian war (1991-1995), the traces of altercation are still present. Delapidated, destroyed houses - partly sitting right next to minefields, or in the middle of townscapes, waiting for their owners - act as unintentional memorials, warding off oblivion. The former inhabitants or their descendants/heirs return only slowly to the area rendered improvident by the Yugoslavian war. What persists are half abandoned villages and scarcely inhabited cities in the hinterland, off the beaten track, which still haven't recovered from the times of war. Filmed in Zitnic, Drnis, Sibenik and Tepljuh (Croatia) in 2008, in locations around the area of the temporary border of the internationally not recognized 'Republic of Serbian Krajina'. After the 'Log Revolution' in August 1990 this area became one of the focal points in the Yugoslavian/Croatian war 1991-1995.

Butterflies

Will the Internet overcome traditional media? Will new media and traditional media merge? The film documents the struggles and successes of characters Lisanova, Mr. Safety, Davedays, Boh3m3, Olgakay and Xgobobeanx and their hopes to become the new 'virtual' celebrities. Also in the film: Fred, SxePhil, Charles Trippy, KevJumba, Kicesie, Paperlilies, KatiesOpinion, Daxflame, Joe Satriani, Esmee Denters, Whatthebuck, David Foley, Renetto, ClipCritics, Katy Perry, GayGod, Nigahiga, Chad Hurley and others.

Confession of the Devil

Director: Igor Parfenov.
Mental hospital, special department. A solitary cell has become a temporary place of detention for the leader of an organization “Earth Liberation Front”. He’s extremely insane and dangerous. His organization is recognized as terrorist. Having fallen into his nightmare visions, he refused to communicate with the outer world. His fate was predetermined: life imprisonment or death by shooting. But the last straw was not even the murder of 6 hostages – famous people; he went much further, challenging the existing system. Everyone left him. The only one who finds access to his sick mind and makes him talk is a young female doctor. But confession of the terrorist turns out to be much more terrific than the death of hostages, mental hospital cellars, and everything that an average mentality is used to. He made everyone see the war that constantly takes place all over the world, the war that were started by people against the nature, the war that an average person can’t even notice.
