UNE CÉRÉMONIE D'OUVERTURE ENTRE ÉMOTION ET RÉFLEXION

Palais Eynard (Hôtel municipal de Genève). Les invités locaux et internationaux du FIFOG sont tous là. Après une succession de prise de parole au pupitre pour faire l’éloge du FIFOG, la Présidente du festival Mme Salika Wenger a lancé officiellement les festivités qui se termineront le 5 mai. Une autre cérémonie de remise des prix interviendra le 4 mai au soir et sera suivie par la projection du film L’Extraordinaire voyage du fakir de Ken Scott.
Lors de leur prise de parole, les intervenants ont souligné l'importance du cinéma comme vecteur de rapprochement et le rôle du FIFOG comme vitrine pour un cinéma souvent ignoré de l'industrie.
Tandis que Monsieur Rémy Pagani, Conseiller administratif de la Ville de Genève, a mis en valeur l'importance du cinéma qui met en lumière des vérités cachées, Madame Salika Wenger, Présidente du FIFOG, a souligné le rôle unificateur de ce dernier. Le réalisateur tunisien Mahmoud Ben Mahmoud, a mis l'accent sur l'opportunité que représente le FIFOG pour certains réalisateurs de l'Orient, alors que Monsieur Bahij Hojeij, réalisateur libanais, a relevé que le FIFOG est un précieux espace d'expression et de liberté pour le cinéma indépendant. Enfin, Monsieur Tahar Houchi, Directeur artistique du festival, a insisté sur le rôle primordial du FIFOG qui favorise le dialogue entre Orient et Occident.

Une ouverture libanaise

Après le court-métrage omanais Asiya de Mohammed Saud Al Harthy et la cérémonie officielle, c’est le film libanais Good Morning, en présence de son réalisateur Bahidj Hojeij, qui assure l’ouverture du festival.
Le débat qui a suivi ce film profond, dense et drôle a été une occasion pour faire le tour sur l’état du cinéma libanais et la particularité de ce petit pays qui a réussi à accomplir un grand exploit : réaliser la paix malgré la composition complexe de la société singularisée par une rare diversité confessionnelle. Le festival, qui baissera rideau le 5 mai, propose un tour d’Orient en 80 films sélectionnés parmi un millier d’œuvres, autour du thème de l’éloge de la différence.

Plusieurs prix à gagner

Plusieurs films seront récompensés par les 8 jurys du festival avec des FIFOG d’or et FIFOG d’argent lors de la cérémonie de remise de prix le samedi 4 mai à 19h00 pour les compétitions suivantes : officielle, critique, documentaire, courts-métrage et 3 scolaires.
La première donne du prestige au festival et crée une réelle concurrence constructive, la deuxième, met en valeur la profondeur du travail artistique, la troisième souligne la pertinence de l’analyse et la compréhension des sociétés et la quatrième permet de découvrir de nouveaux talents. Enfin, les compétitions scolaires ambitionnent à toucher le jeune public ; à donner des clés d’analyse filmique et à offrir des chances de comprendre l’Orient en dehors de l’actualité sensationnelle relayée par les médias.

AN OPENING CEREMONY BETWEEN EMOTION AND REFLECTION

Eynard Palace (Geneva City Hall). The FIFOG's local and international guests are all here. After a succession of speakers to praise the FIFOG, Salika Wenger, the festival's President, officially launched the festivities that will end on May the 5th. An awards ceremony will take place on the evening of May the 4th and will be followed by the screening of Ken Scott's film « L'Extraordinaire voyage du fakir ».
During their speech, the speakers emphasized the importance of cinema as a vector of unity and the role of the FIFOG to promote a cinema often ignored by the industry.
While Mr. Rémy Pagani, Administrative Advisor of the City of Geneva, highlighted the importance of cinema which reveal hidden truths, Mrs. Salika Wenger emphasized its the unifying role. Tunisian director Mahmoud Ben Mahmoud explained why the FIFOG is a real opportunity for some directors, while Mr. Bahij Hojeij, a Lebanese director, thanked FIFOG for being a showcase for independent cinema. Finally, Mr. Tahar Houchi, Artistic Director of the festival, emphasized the vital role of the FIFOG in fostering dialogue between East and West.

A Lebanese opening

Following Mohammed Saud Al Harthy's Omani short film Asiya and after the official ceremony, it's the Lebanese film Good Morning, in the presence of its director Bahidj Hojeij, that opens the festival.
The debate that followed this deep, dense and funny film was an opportunity to look at the condition of the Lebanese cinema and the particularity of this small country that managed to achieve a great feat: reaching peace despite the complex composition of its society singled out by a rare confessional diversity. The festival, which will end on May the 5th, offers a trip to Orient in 80 films selected from a thousand works, around the theme of « the praise of difference ».

Several Awards to win

Several films will be rewarded by the 8 juries of the festival with gold FIFOG and silver FIFOG at the award ceremony on Saturday, May 4 at 19:00 for the following catagories: official, critic, documentary, short films and 3 school competitions.
The first gives prestige to the festival and creates a real constructive competition. The second, emphasizes the depth of artistic work, the third highlights the relevance of analysis and understanding of societies. The fourth allows to discover new talents. Finally, school competitions aim to reach the young audience; to give film analysis tools and to offer the chance to understand the East outside the sensational news relayed by media.
