FIDMARSEILLE 4-9 JUILLET JULY 2023

 

L’ensemble du programme de la 34ème édition du FIDMarseille comprend 106 films venant de 30 pays.

Après avoir visionné près de 3000 films, le comité de sélection du FIDMarseille en a retenu 45 pour composer les compétitions. Parmi ceux-ci, 34 sont présentés en Première Mondiale. Le FIDMarseille continue d’affirmer sa vocation de festival défricheur, défenseur de formes, visions et modes de production qui font la vitalité d’un cinéma en prise sur un monde bouleversé et changeant. C’est pourquoi, cette année encore, la Compétition Premier Film et, d’une manière générale, les films réalisés par de jeunes cinéastes, sont au cœur du festival et de son ambition. À leurs côtés, des cinéastes plus expérimentés, au parcours internationalement reconnu, ont choisi le FID pour y présenter leurs dernières œuvres.

La section Autres Joyaux accueille dans un programme hors-compétition une vingtaine de films, dont les derniers de Jean-Luc Godard ou de Wang Bing. Des films restaurés et inédits, des séances spéciales en complicité avec certains de nos partenaires, et une programmation Jeune public renforcée complètent la sélection officielle 2023.

Après Mathieu Amalric et Albert Serra en 2022, nous avons choisi d’inviter et de célébrer trois cinéastes et artistes aux univers très différents. Whit Stillman, auteur de 5 films qui, depuis Metropolitan (1990), ont révolutionné la comédie américaine, sera à Marseille pour la première rétrospective consacrée à son œuvre. Nous rendrons hommage à Paul Vecchiali, immense cinéaste récemment décédé, par un programme de 7 films qu’accompagneront ses amis, acteurs et collaborateurs. Enfin, nous sommes fiers de réunir et présenter, pour la première fois dans le champ du cinéma, une sélection importante des films de l’artiste française Laure Prouvost, figure majeure de la scène contemporaine internationale.

Le FIDMarseille est aussi un espace pour l’industrie du cinéma, grâce au FIDLab - plateforme de coproduction internationale qui aura lieu le 6 et le 7 juillet. Avec le programme FIDCampus - résidence pour des étudiants et jeunes réalisateurs du monde entier, le FIDMarseille affirme son rôle dans la formation des cinéastes de demain.

The 34th edition of the Marseille International Film Festival (FIDMarseille) features 106 films from 30 countries.

From nearly 3000 films viewed, FIDMarseille’s selection committee has chosen 45 for the festival’s competition sections. 34 of these films will be presented as world premieres. FIDMarseille remains true to its mission as a pioneering festival, championing styles, visions and modes of production that reflect the vitality of a cinema in touch with a shaken-up, changing world. For this reason, the First Film Competition and films by young filmmakers more generally are once again at the heart of the festival and its aspirations. Alongside them, more experienced filmmakers of international renown have chosen to present their latest works at FIDMarseille.

The Other Gems section features an out-of-competition program of some twenty films, including the most recent works of Jean-Luc Godard and Wang Bing. Restored and unreleased films, special screenings in collaboration with some of our partners, and a bolstered Young Audiences program complete the 2023 official selection.

Following on from Mathieu Amalric and Albert Serra in 2022, we have chosen to invite and showcase three filmmakers and artists from very different worlds. Whit Stillman, whose 5 films from Metropolitan (1990) onwards have revolutionized American comedy, will join us in Marseille for the first ever retrospective of his work. We will pay tribute to the great filmmaker Paul Vecchiali, who recently passed away, through a program of 7 films in the presence of his friends, actors, and collaborators. Finally, we are proud to bring together and present, for the first time in the field of cinema, a substantial selection of films by the French artist Laure Prouvost, a major figure on the contemporary international art scene.

FIDMarseille is also a meeting point for the film industry, thanks to FIDLab, an international co-production platform taking place on July 6 and 7. With FIDCampus—a residency program for students and young filmmakers from across the world—FIDMarseille demonstrates its commitment to training tomorrow’s filmmakers.

Hygiène et élégance, un Centre de prévention du suicide, et l’invention d’une nouvelle danse. Tout en appliquant avec ferveur leur programme de réformes, elles initient Lily, fraîchement arrivée, aux règles de vie de la communauté.

Avec cette comédie colorée et musicale, Whit Stillman invente, entre grotesque et sophistication, et avec une infinie tendresse pour ses personnages, rien de moins qu’un nouvel humour américain.

At Seven Oaks University, Violet (Greta Gerwig) and her two friends are on a mission to save the campus from depression and male decadence. Their recipe? As they fervently implement their program of reforms, they introduce new arrival Lily to the rules of community life.

Chacun poursuit sa chimère sans jamais parvenir à la saisir. Pour certains, c'est un rêve d’argent facile, pour d'autres la quête d’un amour passé… De retour dans sa petite ville du bord de la mer Tyrrhénienne, Arthur retrouve sa bande de Tombaroli, des pilleurs de tombes étrusques et de merveilles archéologiques. Arthur a un don qu’il met au service de ses amis brigands : il ressent le vide. Le vide de la terre dans laquelle se trouvent les vestiges d’un monde passé. Le même vide qu’a laissé en lui le souvenir de son amour perdu, Beniamina.

 

Each of them pursues their own dream without ever being able to grasp it. For some, it's a dream of easy money, for others it's the quest for a past love... Back in his little town on the Tyrrhenian coast, Arthur meets up with his gang of Tombaroli, plunderers of Etruscan tombs and archaeological wonders. Arthur has a gift that he puts to good use for his bandit friends: he can feel emptiness. The emptiness of the earth in which lie the remains of a past world. Chantal de Beauregard a créé en 1985 le Prix Georges de Beauregard dédié à la mémoire de son père, le producteur Georges de Beauregard. Elle s’est ensuite tournée vers une mémorisation plus pérenne et plus ciblée et a choisi de l’intégrer au FID, Marseille étant le lieu de naissance de Georges de Beauregard et de sa famille maternelle.. Né dans le quartier Saint-Jérôme à Marseille, Georges de Beauregard a produit des courts, des moyens et des longs métrages, certains pouvant être considérés comme des « documents de l’histoire et du temps » tels La passe du diable d’après l’oeuvre de Joseph Kessel tourné en 1957 en Afghanistan, premier long métrage de Pierre Schoendoerffer, Le petit soldat de Jean-Luc Godard sur la guerre d’Algérie (1960) ou encore des films tels que À bout de Souffle, Cléo de 5 à 7 et Pierrot le fou.

 

Chantal de Beauregard created the Georges de Beauregard Award as a tribute to her father, film producer Georges de Beauregard. In order to create a more relevant and lasting legacy, she chose to integrate the award to FID, as George de Beauregard was born in Marseille and his mother’s family was from this city. Born in theSaint-Jérôme neighborhood in Marseille, George de Beauregard produced short, medium-length and feature films, some of which are celebrated as documents that captured both history and their time: La Passe du diable after Joseph Kessel’s novel (1957), Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Petit Soldat (1960) on the Algerian War, or classics such as Breathless (À Bout de souffle), Cleo from 5 to 7 and Pierrot le fou.

Le Prix Alice Guy du FID a été initié en 2020.

 

Alice Guy was the first female filmmaker in the world. She is little known today, regardless of her prestigious and prolific career. Created in her memory in 2018, the Alice Guy Prize aims at highlighting the work of female directors by rewarding a feature film made by a woman. The FID’s Alice Guy Prize has been introduced in 2020.

Avec l’accord et le soutien de la Direction interrégionale des Services Pénitentiaires PACA–Corse, du Centre Pénitentiaire de Marseille et du CNC, l’association Lieux Fictifs, le Master « Métiers du film documentaire » de l’université Aix-Marseille et le FIDMarseille mènent ensemble une action pour faire résonner dans une même temporalité, au centre pénitentiaire de Marseille Les Baumettes, l’événement du festival. Une sélection d’une dizaine de films en compétition sera présentée à un public de personnes détenues et volontaires. Les personnes détenues qui auront pu suivre la programmation dans son ensemble pourront, si elles le désirent, se constituer membres du jury, et exercer leur arbitrage à l’occasion de la nomination d’un lauréat. Chaque film sera accompagné et présenté par des étudiants de l’université d’Aix-Marseille et par les réalisateurs dans la mesure du possible.

 

With support from the Interegional Direction of Prison Services of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) and Corsica, Marseille Prison Centre and the Centre National du Cinéma (CNC), the association “Lieux Fictifs” partnered with the Master degree in documentary filmmaking of Aix-Marseille University and with FIDMarseille to bring the film festival to the prison of Marseille Les Baumettes. Ten films from the competition will be selected, and presented to a voluntary audience of inmates. The participants who have watched the entire programme will have the opportunity to become jury members and nominate a laureate. Each film will be presented by students from Aix-Marseille University and when possible by their director.

En cinq films, de Metropolitan (1990) à Love & Friendship (2015), Whit Stillman s’est imposé comme le prince de la comédie américaine contemporaine. Or la comédie est bien connue comme étant l’un des genres les plus difficiles au cinéma. Stillman y excelle en pariant sur l’élégance, sur l’intelligence, sur l’amour de ses personnages et non sur leur dérision. Le génie de Stillman est celui de dialogues d’un brillant et d’une vivacité sans pareille ; celui d’une mise en scène sobre et ciselée, tout entière tournée vers la vie des personnages et la vitesse de leurs pensées, la subtilité de leurs émotions. C’est aussi, à l’âge de l’inflation des budgets et des écritures boursouflées, un éloge de l’économie, de la sobriété et de la vitesse qu’elles autorisent. Devant un film de Stillman, on croit voir Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant et James Stewart ressusciter l’âge d’or hollywoodien pour réenchanter notre monde, y projeter un peu de leur élégance et de leur impertinence. Assumer un héritage (la comédie sophistiquée hollywoodienne des années 1930-40) non pour le copier, le reproduire, mais pour y trouver des puissances d’interprétation très personnelles d’un genre cinématographique. Tenir ensemble l’ancien et le nouveau. 

Le cinéma de Whit Stillman, c’est à la fois une esthétique, une éthique et une politique peu communes, que partage le FIDMarseille. Nous sommes très heureux.ses de présenter la première rétrospective intégrale de son œuvre et en sa présence.

 

À l’occasion de cette rétrospective, le FIDMarseille publie un ouvrage collectif, le premier en français consacré à son œuvre, en coédition avec Les éditions de l'œil. L'édition anglaise du livre est publiée chez Fireflies Press.

 

In just five films, from Metropolitan (1990) to Love & Friendship (2015), Whit Stillman has emerged as the prince of contemporary American comedy. Comedy may be the most difficult genre in cinema, but Stillman excels at it by gambling on elegance over vulgarity, intelligence over stupidity, and love for his characters over mockery. Stillman’s genius lies first and foremost in his dialogues of an unequalled brilliance and intensity; then in his understated and finely crafted direction, entirely focused on the lives of his characters, their quick-wittedness, and the subtlety of their emotions. It also lies, in a time of ballooning budgets and overblown scripts, in his championing of frugality, simplicity, and the pace they set. In Stillman’s films, we almost glimpse Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart resurrecting the Hollywood golden age, re-enchanting our world with some of their style and impertinence. To take on this cultural heritage (the sophisticated Hollywoodian comedy of the 1930s and 1940s) is not to copy or reproduce, but to find in it highly personal powers of interpretation of a cinematic genre, and to bind together old and new. Stillman’s esthetics, ethics, and politics are uncommon, but shared by FIDMarseille. We are therefore delighted to present the first complete retrospective of Whit Stillman’s work, in the presence of Stillman himself.

 

To coincide with this retrospective, FIDMarseille is publishing a collective work, the first in French devoted to his work, in co-publication with Les éditions de l'œil. The English version was published by Fireflies Press.

Laure Prouvost aime jouer avec les objets, les mots, les langues… et les images. Artiste internationalement reconnue, elle est notamment lauréate du Turner prize en 2013 et artiste invitée au pavillon français de la Biennale de Venise 2019. Depuis les années 2000, elle se nourrit avec gourmandise de son quotidien d'artiste, de femme, de mère, qu'elle absorbe, digère, transforme et restitue sous toutes les formes propices à traduire son imaginaire fantasque : films, installations, sculptures, performances qu'elle combine avec joie et malice. Impressions fugitives, carnets de notes, capsules, traits d'esprit, mises en scène fantasmagoriques, l'image en mouvement innerve son œuvre prolifique depuis ses débuts. Nous présentons pour la première fois au FIDMarseille un programme exclusivement consacré à cette facette protéiforme de son univers, qui expose avec générosité et souvent impertinence une relation sensible au monde.

Laure Prouvost likes to play with objects, words, language... and images. She is an internationally recognised artist, notably winner of the Turner prize in 2013 and guest artist at the French pavilion of the 2019 Venice Biennale. Since the 2000s, she has been feeding on her daily life as an artist, a woman and a mother, which she absorbs, digests, transforms and restores in all the forms able to translate her whimsical imagination: films, installations, sculptures, performances she combines with joy and malice. Fugitive impressions, notebooks, capsules, witticism, phantasmagorical staging, the moving image has permeated her prolific work since the beginning. For the first time at FIDMarseille, we are presenting a programme devoted exclusively to this protean facet of her universe, which generously and often impertinently exposes a sensory relationship with the world.

En écho au programme de films proposé dans les salles, une exposition d'un ensemble de vidéos de Laure Prouvost, sera présentée à SOMA, centre d’art hybride au cœur de Marseille. Inverser le mouvement des images : après avoir été projetées de l'installation à l'écran, elles sont de retour dans l'espace de l'exposition.

 

Echoing the film programme in the cinemas, an exhibition of videos by Laure Prouvost will be presented at SOMA, a hybrid art centre in the heart of Marseille. Reversing the movement of the images: after being projected from the installation onto the screen, they return to the exhibition space.

Cinéaste, écrivain, critique, compositeur, producteur, acteur… Avec Paul Vecchiali s’est éteint en début d’année l’un des derniers grands cinéastes de sa génération. À la fois populaire et expérimentateur, amoureux du passé et inventeur de formes, il a su, en dessinant sa propre marge, œuvrer en plein cœur du cinéma. Des Ruses du Diable (1965) à Un soupçon d’amour (2020), Paul Vecchiali a cultivé avec un panache unique, pour lui-même et pour tous.tes celleux qu’il a porté.e.s, produit.e.s ou inspiré.e.s, la plus haute idée de la souveraineté artistique. Mais aussi le goût du risque et de la vitesse, l’indifférence au pouvoir. 

Parce que ces valeurs d’audace et de générosité, d’indépendance et de fidélité, sont celles que le FIDMarseille cultive chaque année, célébrer Paul Vecchiali et son héritage est pour nous l’évidence-même.

Nous avions commencé à travailler avec lui à un programme de films qui réunit autour de lui ses ami.e.s et admirateur.rice.s et lui rendra le plus chaleureux des hommages. De son œuvre immense (plus de soixante-dix films), nous avons extrait sept joyaux. Du 4 au 9 juillet prochains, le cinéma et l’esprit de Paul Vecchiali seront vivants et vibrants, once more, parmi nous. 

À l’occasion de cet hommage, le FIDMarseille publie Paul Vecchiali, once more, un ouvrage collectif consacré à l’ensemble de son œuvre, en coédition avec Les éditions de l’œil.

 

Filmmaker, writer, critic, composer, producer, actor… One of the last great filmmakers of his generation, Paul Vecchiali passed away in January of this year. Both popular and experimental, a passionate historian and inventor of forms, he set his own parameters, working at the very heart of cinema. From Ruses du Diable (1965) to Bonjour la langue (2023), Paul Vecchiali nurtured with a unique panache—for himself and for all those he supported, produced or inspired—the loftiest vision of artistic sovereignty, as well as a taste for risk and speed, and an indifference to power.

Every year, FIDMarseille fosters these values of audacity and generosity, independence and fidelity, and so it seems only natural for us to celebrate Paul Vecchiali and his legacy.

Before his passing, we had begun to work with him on a program of films that would bring together his friends and admirers and pay him the warmest of tributes. From his immense body of work (over 70 films), we have extracted seven gems. From July 4^th to 9th, Paul Vecchiali’s cinema and spirit will be alive and vibrant, once more, among us.

En partenariat avec Studio Fotokino

 

Tous les ans, le FIDMarseille invite Fotokino à imaginer une programmation de films de patrimoine ou récents accessible aux plus jeunes, pour les initier à une pluralité d’expressions cinématographiques.

Pour la 34ème édition du festival, enfants et adultes seront tout autant séduits par le récit et la technique virtuose de La Traversée de Florence Miailhe, que par une programmation dédiée à l’inimitable acrobate du cinématographe, Buster Keaton. Ce clin d'œil à Paul Vecchiali, auquel le FID rend hommage cette année (il adorait Keaton), est doublé de la participation du duo musical Catherine Vincent, ses compagnons de route, qui mettront en musique et chansons un court-métrage en ouverture de séance.

 

Every year, FIDMarseille invites Fotokino to imagine a programme of recent or older films accessible to the youngest generation, in order to introduce a plurality of cinematographic expressions to them.

For the festival’s 34th edition, children and adults alike will be seduced by the storytelling and virtuoso drawing technique of Florence Miailhe's La Traversée, as well as by a programme dedicated to the unparalleled acrobat of the cinematograph, Buster Keaton. This nod to Paul Vecchiali, to whom the FID pays tribute this year (who revered Keaton), is coupled with the participation of the musical duo Catherine Vincent, his friends and partners, who will add music and song to a silent short film as our session opener.

En plus des échanges en salle, le FIDMarseille organise chaque après-midi, du mercredi au samedi, dans l'espace ouvert et convivial de la Brasserie BLUM, deux heures de parole et d'échanges pour prendre du recul sur les partis pris de la 34e édition du festival et

approfondir les questions qu'elle suscite.

Une rencontre sera consacrée à Paul Vecchiali et son héritage : comment produire, quel travail avec les acteurs, quelles filiations, quels enjeux pour la fiction ?

Une seconde rencontre sera dédiée à la jeune scène cinématographique locale. A quoi tient cette vitalité ? Quels acteurs, quels réseaux, quels films se font et comment ?

À partir de films issus de la Sélection Officielle, les troisième et quatrième rencontres aborderont des questions centrales pour le cinéma indépendant contemporain  : celle de l’image (au sens de la photographie des films), de ses enjeux plastiques et politiques, celle d’une production réellement indépendante, soit de la capacité pour les films à demeurer des laboratoires, des lieux de risque et d’expérimentation.

 

In addition to in-cinema discussions, FIDMarseille will be holding two hours of talks and discussions to take a wider look at the artistic choices of the 34^th edition of the festival and delve deeper into the questions they raise, every Wednesday to Saturday afternoon in the relaxed setting of the Brasserie Blum.

One meeting will be devoted to Paul Vecchiali and his legacy: how to produce, how to work with actors, what connections, what issues for fiction?

A second meeting will be dedicated to the young and local filmmaking scene. What makes it so vibrant? Which actors, what networks, and what films are made and how?

Based on films from the Official Selection, the third and fourth meetings will address questions central to contemporary independent cinema: that of the image (in the sense of film photography), its visual and political issues, and that of truly independent production, i.e. the ability of films to remain laboratories, places of risk and experimentation.
