About the Director: 

At the moment Jonas Trukanas (b. 1990) is studying Film production with Film directing pathway in one of most prestigious European academies – University for Creative Arts. Documentary directed by Jonas called Arrows in the dark was included into international film programme for 2012 London Olympics and will be screened in variety of UK film festivals and cinemas until year 2012. In 2010 summer Jonas directed a biggest project he has done – film Book smuggler. Director’s biggest dream is to make films in Lithuania – his native land.

Film synopsis: 
Year 1869 – Lithuania is a part of Imperial Russia. Both Lithuanian written language and Lithuanian press are banished. But these oppressions are engaged by secret Lithuanian schools – where young people are thaught Lithuanian language and book smugglers start walking around villages and smuggling books to simple folk. Even if large part of society is still indifferent to Lithuanian national identity – book smuggler ranks are constantly growing. Colorful life of nineteenth century Lithuanian country side, humor, adventures, dangers and hard choices… That’s only a little part of what scapegrace named Jurgis experiences when he meets book smuggler Mažvydas.
