Presenting the website

Indie Grits Film Festival, the Southeast’s premier film and culture festival in Columbia, S.C. for DIY media-makers, will take place April 15-19, 2015, and for the first time, the festival will have a theme: “Future Perfect.” Additionally, 2015’s Indie Grits is calling for visual artists whose work will enhance Columbia’s public spaces during the festival for a multi-faceted exhibit, thanks to funding by an Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The ninth annual Indie Grits, hosted by the Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s oldest art-house cinema located on Main Street in South Carolina’s capital city, will feature five full days of the best DIY short, experimental, animated and student film, music, food and outside-the-box artistic performances from South Carolina and the Southeast. Indie Grits has twice been named one of MovieMaker magazine’s Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World.

As always, Indie Grits Film Festival will continue to focus on offering audiences opportunities to see the best new films coming from independent Southern filmmakers with a far-reaching, experimental scope during the festival. Additionally, festivalgoers will enjoy other favorite events like the Spork in Hand Puppet Slam, a music concerts in a range of venues and the Slow Food at Indie Grits Sustainable Chefs Showcase.

For more information on Indie Grits, visit or contact Seth Gadsden, festival director at, (803) 254-8324.

The 9th Annual Indie Grits Film Festival will be held April 15-19, 2015 in Columbia, South Carolina. Every year Indie Grits brings out the very best in low-budget film and media from the Southeast.

The Indie Grits Film Festival is a 5-day-event that saw over 12,000 visitors in 2014. Filmmakers seek us out after premiering their films at festivals like SXSW and Sundance, and we were twice named one of the 20 “Coolest Film Festivals” in the world by Moviemaker Magazine in 2012 and 2014. Indie Grits is the premiere multi-day DIY, experimental film festival in South Carolina and the Southeast. We host a wide range of cultural events featuring the very best of food, music, and interactive media arts from the Southeast. Partnerships with Slow Food Columbia, Spork in Hand, TAPP's Art Center, the Columbia Museum of Art, and many, many others will bring thousands of young people to our city for 5 days of festivities.

One of our guiding principles is that independent media should be celebrated as an end in itself and not be looked at as simply a springboard to big budget movie making. With that in mind we look for truly unique, independent work that wouldn't necessarily find its way into other festivals. We’re also happy to be able to reward those filmmakers with cash awards in hopes that they reinvest the money in future projects.

Our festival is run by the non-profit Nickelodeon Theatre – not the chamber of commerce or the tourism board – and we think it shows. If your work embraces grittiness, transcends boundaries or defies categorization, we want it. If your work makes viewers confused, jubilant, curious, devastated, or outraged, we want it (especially if it can do all at once). Most importantly, if you had a great time making your piece and want to share it with others, we want it.

We hope you’ll consider submitting.
