Head down to the Pompidou Centre until March 13th to be in with the chance of hearing Michel Gondry, internationally acclaimed director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind amongst many other films, talk about his latest and past projects. Follow this up with a projection of one of his films or music videos, and then a stroll around the interactive exhibition of sets designed by Gondry for an evening well spent.

You can also participate in a unique film-making workshop that takes place at the exhibition which has been designed for this exact purpose. The workshop offers the opportunity, as part of a small group, to make a short film for free in the space of 3 hours. Be sure to watch the films that have already been made as you pass the TV at the end of the exhibition.

But don’t hang about to book the workshop as it seems places are already pretty much gone – we were advised to come down on the day in the hope of joining a group that had already booked or in the case of a cancellation.

This exhibition is a delight for dedicated Gondry fans and film novices alike; visitors can walk around the set where workshop participants make their films and get involved by playing with the variety of props on show – photo ops are a plenty here. Through this programme of events, he has created the chance for anyone to get involved, irrespective of their level of experience in the industry. As a result, film making is made accessible and who knows, perhaps Gondry will even have some influence on young participants’ study or career choices.

Speaking about his latest projects at the opening night of the exhibition, it is obvious why Gondry has had such success in his career; a genuinely nice man and an excellent filmmaker, his creative talents seem to be endless. The animations in his film of an interview with Noam Chomsky are cleverly interpreted in tune with Chomsky’s answers and the other short films that we watched on the opening night were light-hearted but sensitively directed. To bring a great opening night to an end, Gondry played alongside his brother as their band performed for everyone. Film, fun and music from the talented Mr Gondry makes for the perfect Parisian evening out.

L’atelier vous donne la possibilité d’entrer dans un petit groupe pour créer un court-métrage pendant une période de 3 heures gratuitement. N’oubliez pas de regarder les films déjà réalisés quand vous passerez la télé à la fin de l’exposition.

Mais ne tardez pas à réserver l’atelier car il paraît que tout est presque complet — on nous a conseillé de venir dans la journée dans l’espoir de rejoindre un groupe qui a déjà réservé ou en cas d’annulation.

Cette exposition est un vrai plaisir pour les inconditionnels de Gondry ainsi que les néophytes du film; les visiteurs peuvent se promener dans les décors où les participants de l’atelier font leurs films et y prendre part en jouant avec les nombreux accessoires exposés — les opportunités de prendre des photos ne manquent pas ici. Avec sa programmation des évènements, il a créé des chances de participer pour tout le monde, peu importe leur niveau d’expérience dans le milieu. Par conséquent, la réalisation des films est rendu accessible et qui sait, peut-être Gondry aura-t-il même influencé les choix d’étude ou de carrière des jeunes participants.

Quant à ses projets récents dont il a parlé pendant la soirée d’ouverture de l’exposition, le succès de Gondry est évident : c’est un homme vraiment sympa et un réalisateur excellent, ses talents créatifs semblent inépuisables. Les animations dans son film-interview avec Noam Chomsky sont ingénieusement interprétées et accordées aux réponses de Chomsky et les autres court-métrages qu’on a vus pendant la soirée d’ouverture étaient gais mais réalisés avec délicatesse. Pour finir cette magnifique soirée, Gondry a rejoint son frère pour jouer avec leur groupe pour tous les visiteurs. Les films, le plaisir et la musique du talentueux Mr Gondry font m’ont fait passé une merveilleuse soirée parisienne.
